The early predictions for the MacBook Air’s next upgrade were for a launch in late 2021 as buzz began to build about the device. However, as the deadline approaches, the timeline appears to have been pushed back, and the odds of a timely launch look to be dwindling.
Apple’s upcoming MacBook Air has been generating a lot of hype. That’s because the next generation of the ultra-lightweight laptop isn’t going to be a standard refresh. Apple is working on something significant for its smallest laptop, according to numerous well-placed sources and observers.
The consensus around the MacBook Air’s release date seems to have now settled around the middle of 2022. For instance, Twitter leaker Dylandkt, who has a fairly solid track record when it comes to Apple leaks, says we can expect the new MacBook Air “in the first half of 2022.”
However, respected Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo stated in September that the MacBook Air would enter mass production either late in the second quarter of 2022 or early in the third quarter. That suggests a timeline of roughly June to July. If that’s when the MacBook Air is entering mass production, a launch in late summer or fall might be in the cards. The M1X MacBook Pro 14 was reported to have entered mass production in August and is expected to launch in October, for example, offering up a gap of two months from start to finish.
As for the price, we are hoping Apple will either keep the same $999 price as the current MacBook Air, or even bring the price down a little. There is reason to be hopeful on that last point thanks to a report from Ming-Chi Kuo, wherein the analyst stated his expectation that we could see a price drop.
It’s unclear whether Kuo means the new MacBook Air will come in cheaper than $999, or whether the existing M1 MacBook Air will get more affordable and the new edition will occupy the $999 slot in its stead. However, reporter Mark Gurman, whose track record is excellent, believes the new MacBook Air could be positioned as a high-end alternative to the M1 model. If last year’s version, therefore, gets repositioned as an inexpensive alternative, it may be shunted off the $999 price point, which the new model will occupy.
