Dear Annie: I’ve noticed a strange habit that some people seem to have. Recently several friends have been talking to me while using the bathroom. I can hear everything that is going on, including flushing the toilet. I feel very uncomfortable with it. Is it proper etiquette to use the bathroom while on the phone? – Heard too much
Dear Heard: Is that a rhetorical question? No, it is not polite to take someone to the bathroom by phone. The next time someone does this, don’t be afraid to say, “I’ll try again later. You sound busy. “
Dear Annie: I was born with a cleft palate and nose, and I have a psychological complex about it that makes me self-aware around others. But I would really like to meet someone and have a romantic relationship. Can you give me advice on how to move on and just be myself? – MP
Dear MP: I hope this goes without saying, but a cleft palate or nose doesn’t make you unattractive. Anyone who says otherwise does not deserve the pleasure of your company.
Now you mention your self-awareness as a barrier to meeting people. I encourage you to first and foremost consider trying therapy to nurture a healthier self-esteem. The moment when we love ourselves completely is when we are ready to accept love from someone else. You may also benefit from talking to other people who understand your experience. The Cleft Lip and Palate Association facilitates such support communities. Dear Annie: You recently published a letter from “Monarch Watcher” saying that Hass avocados were destroying monarch butterfly habitats. Don’t renounce avocados just yet. Monarchs have indeed experienced a sharp decline in their habitat, but avocado cultivation is not to blame. Here are some facts for you.
Eastern Monarchs winter in Mexico, Western monarchs mainly in California.
2. Mexico established the Monarch Butterfly Biospace Preserve to help preserve habitat.
3. In 2016, the US stated that it will accept avocados from all over Mexico, provided they can comply with the measures taken to prevent the spread of diseases and insects set up by the farms in the Michoacan areas.
4. One of the causes of the decline of the monarch population is the weather in Texas: all butterflies have to migrate through Texas, which has seen some severe droughts in recent years.
5. American agriculture kills weeds, including milkweed. Milkweed flora is a great food source for monarch butterflies. A 2020 report estimates a loss of 165 million hectares of habitat.
This year, monarchs should be covered by the Endangered Species Act. A petition was filed in 2014 and the final decision is expected this year.
