Pixel 6 launch confirmed, new Nokia tablet and Galaxy S21 FE leaks

Samsung has two major Galaxy handsets expected to arrive in the future, and both look to be quieter launches than expected according to SamMobile’s Adnan Farooqui. The Galaxy S22 is looking to be in ints traditional launch spot just before MWC, but theGalaxy S21 Fan Edition may not be here until January, and may not get a launch event at all, just a press release:

This week’s Android Circuit looks back at seven days of news and headlines from the world of Android, including a delay for the Galaxy S22, the Pixel 6 launch confirmed, Honor preparing for Europe, the new Nokia T20 tablet, Android 12 going open source, OnePlus’ OxygenOS update, and Google Maps catching a train. Android Circuit is here to remind you of some of the numerous things that have happened in the recent week in the Android world (and you can find the weekly Apple news digest here).

“It’s unlikely that both the Galaxy S21 FE and Galaxy S22 series are launched at the same time in January. A month’s gap between the two would make sense. We also hear the Galaxy S21 FE might have limited availability at launch. Some countries may get it in January, others may have to wait for the device to go on sale.”

Google has confirmed the launch of its new Pixel devices. The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, already introduced by Google earlier this year, will get the full treatment and presentation on October 19th at 10am Pacific. The two handsets will get a lot of time, but expect Google to lean heavily into its new mobile silicon: “On October 19, we’re officially introducing you to Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro—the completely reimagined Google phones. Powered by Tensor, Google’s first custom mobile chip, they’re fast, smart and secure. And they adapt to you. #Pixel6Launch”

Following its climb to third place in China, Honor is preparing to launch the Honor 50 in Europe. Roland Quant is reporting a potential price of 499 Euros for the handset, which is expected to ship with Google eMobile Services. With Honor now a standalone company, it makes sense that it will be looking at new pricing points and higher specced handsets.

“This makes the Honor 50 a bit more expensive than other smartphones with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G Octacore SoC used here. The chip should offer an absolutely sufficient performance, as it has eight computing cores up to 2.4 gigahertz and is closely related to Qualcomm’s current top model, the Snapdragon 888. The Snapdragon 778G is manufactured on a 6 nanometer scale and also offers other good features, but the top model has a performance advantage of around 15 to 20 percent in multi-core and single-core benchmarks.”

HMD Global has released the Nokia T20 tablet, the first Android tablet to carry the Nokia brand since 2014. Priced at £179 for the Wi-Fi model, and £199 for the 4G model, there’s the hardware has been optimised for video calling: “The team at HMD Global has highlighted the first growth in the tablet market since 2014 as part of that shifting landscape. Video calling has become much more important to everyone, and one of the biggest use cases discussed was using the T20 in just that role. Its 8200 mAh is rated for seven hours of back to back meetings with dual microphones and its five megapixel forward facing camera.”

Google has now pushed the source code Android 12 into the Android Open Source Project, essentially opening up its changes to anyone who wants to download and use the system. Of course not all of Google’s Android services are in this – Google Mobile Services being the prime example where you need to deal with Google – but the core of the mobile OS is ready for everyone. As a bonus, Google’s Developer Blog post on this highlights a number of manufactures expected to run Android 12. It’s worth noting who is directly mentioned, and who might be missing…

“Today we’re… officially releasing the latest version of Android. Keep an eye out for Android 12 coming to a device near you starting with Pixel in the next few weeks and Samsung Galaxy, OnePlus, Oppo, Realme, Tecno, Vivo, and Xiaomi devices later this year. ” OnePlus has released a public beta of OxygenOS 12. Based on the aforementioned Android 12, OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro users will be able to test this early build. The release also brings OxygenOS and ColorOS closer to each other, ahead of a full integration in 2022. “The new and improved OxygenOS 12 is colorful and minimalist like “James Turrell’s Light and Space artwork,” as explained in its forum post announcing this release. OxygenOS 12 shares some of the same design languages as ColorOS 12 and Android 12 by extension. All three OSes make liberal use of white space, as well as large sans-serif typography to “enhance readability and ease of use.””

Google Maps has picked up a new ticket buying feature this week, as popular UK train ticking website ‘Trainline’ has been integrated into the service, allowing an easy avenue between route planning and paying for the trip. .providing Android users with the option to click through to Trainline’s website or app to buy tickets for their journey, as part of a more seamless user experience. Trainline has also recently made Google Pay available to all customers and made it possible for those in the UK to save a ticket into Google Pay, providing more flexibility and choice for Android users.” Android Circuit rounds up the news from the Android world every weekend here on Forbes.
