Democrats on the finance committee on Thursday proposed requiring the Legislature to vote to hire attorneys in the future, but the motion failed. Republican leaders hired the attorneys without requiring rank-and-file lawmakers to weigh in on it. Source www.jsonline.com
Goyke and three other Democrats on the Republican-controlled Joint Finance Committee said the $8.5 million spent on lawyers since July 2018 “underscores the misplaced priorities of Republicans and their disastrous financial choices that are jeopardizing billions for Wisconsin’s economy.” The cost of the litigation to taxpayers was tallied by the nonpartisan Legislative Fiscal Bureau at the request of Democratic Rep. Evan Goyke of Milwaukee.
Republicans in the past have said Democrats and their allies are the ones to blame for the costs because they are the ones bringing many of the lawsuits, such as those challenging election laws. Among the lawsuits they launched was one to halt Evers’ stay-at-home order during the pandemic last year. The state Supreme Court ruled in lawmakers’ favor, ending the stay-at-home order early.
