Shortly before the market launch, Sony demonstrates what makes Playstation VR 2 unique and why the purchase may be worthwhile for gamers.
In two weeks, the Playstation VR 2 will be released, ushering in a new era of VR gaming that will outperform standalone VR experiences like the Meta Quest 2. (review). At least, that is the VR gaming community’s hope.
Sony is pounding the drum of promotion with a new trailer that highlights the headset’s features and illustrates them with concrete game scenes from upcoming titles.
Foveated rendering, a technique that makes game worlds appear especially sharp and clear, is one of the teased features. Eye-tracking enables the technique, which also allows you to determine the direction of grenades with your gaze alone. Another feature is headset haptics, which allow you to feel your opponents’ blows as vibrations on your head.
Then there are the premium Sense controllers, which include touch detection, adaptive triggers, and their own high-quality haptic effects.
What’s important is what comes after the launch
Sony’s trailer sends a clear message. An immersive experience package like this has never existed before and will not appear anytime soon, whether on a TV or with other VR systems. Sony is most likely correct in this regard. For a long time, Playstation VR 2 will be the gold standard in VR gaming.
MIXED contributor Ben Danneberg noted in his PSVR 2 preview that the hardware is outstanding. Now, he says, Sony must keep the system constantly stocked with equally outstanding software that takes advantage of the technology.
Several titles in the trailer should do just that. Horizon Call of the Mountain, Gran Turismo 7, Resident Evil Village, Switchback VR, and Firewall Ultra will be among the 30 titles available during the launch period.
Playstation VR 2 is already in circulation
Meanwhile, the press and YouTubers are receiving the first test samples. Several images of the packaging have been shared on social media. Even though we know what’s inside, the contents of the box remain a mystery.
Marketing, pretty trailer or not, still has room for improvement. Instead of a big reveal, Sony revealed hardware and software piecemeal in blog posts, fueling speculation about the Playstation VR 2.
The company still has time to add to the hype. Sony may still have a few surprises in store, according to YouTube channels such as Paradisedecay and PSVR2 without Parole.
The Playstation VR 2 will be available on February 22 for $549. (PS5 required to play).
