Sony Pictures Classics has acquired the rights to a film that will be featured in the PS4 game Dreams

Deadline explains: “Painted by the animation artists behind the Oscar-nominated Loving Vincent, A Winter’s Journey is a romantic and epic tale which blends live action with CG and painted animation. The world of the film is the first to be built using PlayStation’s Dreams, developed by PlayStation Studios’ multiple-BAFTA-winning games studio Media Molecule.” You can see some of the work on the film’s official Twitter page.

Let’s all unwind after a difficult and exhausting week with an inspiring storey about the power of video games: The distribution rights of Alex Helfrecht’s A Winter’s Tale, which is featured in the PlayStation 4 game Dreams, have been acquired by Sony Pictures Classics. The film is set in 1812 in Bavaria, and it tells the storey of a lovelorn poet who “undertakes a perilous walk across mountains, ice, and snow.”

Inspired by Franz Schubert’s Winterreise, a spokesperson for Sony Pictures Classics said: “We’ve never quite seen a project like A Winter’s Journey before, which promises to marry world class cinema and extraordinary painting techniques with one of the great song cycles in musical history. Audiences will joyously embrace this unique theatrical experience.” Producer Jörg Tittel has since confirmed that both PlayStation and Media Molecule are now helping out with the project, which is just phenomenal really, isn’t it?
