Google signs content payment deal with French news publishers

Google and a French publishing lobby reached agreement on Thursday on a copyright framework under which the US technology giant pays news publishers for online content, a first for Europe.

This move paves the way for individual licensing deals for French publications, some of which have seen their revenues decline due to the rise of the Internet and the decline in print circulation. The deal, intended to pay publishers in a sustainable way, is likely to be closely watched by other platforms, such as Facebook, said a lawyer involved in the discussions.

Google, which is owned by Alphabet, and the Alliance de la Presse d’information générale (APIG) said in a statement that the framework includes criteria such as the daily volume of publications, monthly internet traffic and ‘contribution to political and general information. “So far, Google has only signed license agreements with a few publications in France, including the national newspapers Le Monde and Le Figaro. These take into account the framework agreed with APIG,” a Google spokesperson said.

Google’s way of paying news publishers, called Google News Showcase, is another new product it developed that allows publishers to curate their own online content. It is only available in Brazil and Germany so far. Google and APIG have not said how much money could be shared among APIG members, including most of the French national and local publishers. Details on how the fee would be calculated were also not disclosed.

The agreement follows months of negotiations between Google, French publishers and news agencies on the application of renewed EU copyright rules, allowing publishers to charge fees from online platforms displaying snippets of their news. The world’s largest search engine initially opposed the idea of paying publishers for their content, arguing that their websites would benefit from the increased traffic that Google sent to them. sites.
