IIIT Hyderabad and NMDA Develop Rapid Visual Screening (RVS) Primer to Mitigate Earthquake Risks

International Institute of Information Technology Hyderabad (IIITH) and National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) have developed a Rapid Visual Screening (RVS) Primer to better understand structural safety after earthquake risks. The primer will serve as a ground-breaking document to screen different types of buildings for their structural stability and to estimate and estimate the potential damage during an earthquake.

The total number of buildings in India is over 30.5 Crores. The structural status of buildings before and after the earthquake will be an effective benchmark for government agencies, industries, private organizations and local agencies against the threats of earthquakes. While disaster management has thus far followed an emergency response approach, the RVS Primer will assist in a more mitigation and preparedness approach with an ongoing focus on response, which is proactive, holistic and integrated under the Disaster Management Act, 2005.

Prof Pradeep Ramancharla, IIITH, and head of the project team said, “Four in five people in India are living under an earthquake. Targeted earthquake risk mitigation activities, such as building construction, adherence to design standards, and assessment and modification of existing buildings, can significantly reduce the risk from potential earthquake hazards. “More details about RVS Primer at https://ndma.gov.in/images/pdf/RVS-Doc-11-2020.pdf About IIIT-Hyderabad The International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad (IIITH) is an autonomous research university founded in 1998 that focuses on the core areas of Information Technology, such as computer science, electronics and communication, and their applications in other fields through interdisciplinary research with a greater social impact.
