News Highlights: Slow start down UTEP in 18-point defeat to LA Tech
EL PASO, TEXAS (KTSM) – Same old story; same old song and dance for UTEP.
24 hours after looking like an American juggernaut in a wire-to-wire win over Louisiana Tech, the Miners came out flat and never headed as the Bulldogs brought down UTEP 73-55 on Saturday evening at the Don Haskins Center.
“You have to come out and create the competitive spirit you want from the start, and that’s what LA is Tech did, ”said head coach Rodney Terry. “Until we get to where we are consistent, we will struggle with the back-to-back situations until we can put that together as a team.”
LA Tech (12-5, 5-3 C-USA) lit the scoreboard early and led in the first half with no less than 16 runs. Souley Boum’s 23 points allowed UTEP (7-7, 3-5 Conference USA) to catch up to just 9 points at half-time, and a flurry to open the second half brought the Miners as close as four.
However, the Bulldogs went to work from there, holding the Miners without a field goal for nearly nine minutes of play action. On the other side for LA Tech, Isaiah Crawford scored 25 points to help the Bulldogs win.
For the fourth straight weekend in C-USA game, UTEP struggled off the back-to-back slate in the second game. The Miners are only 1-3 in game two of the weekend series this year.
“They wanted their revenge and we couldn’t match their energy. You can’t give up 20 minutes in college basketball, especially in conference play, ”said Boum. “We tried to work our way back, but you have to get out, be consistent and play hard like we did in the first game. If we did, we would have easily won the game. “
With the defeat, UTEP’s 3-5 C-USA record has tied them with Southern Miss and UTSA for last place in the Western division of the league.
UTEP will play on UTSA on Thursday January 28th with a tip before 5pm MT. UTEP and UTSA will meet again on Saturday January 30 with a tip before 7pm at the Haskins Center.
