After controversy surfaced over the new PlayStation voice chat recording, Sony explained that the feature’s sole purpose is to report inappropriate behavior that violates the Community Code of Conduct. According to The Verge, some users were led to believe that the company would actively record and moderate conversations between private groups.
In a recent blog post, Catherine Jensen, Sony’s vice president of global consumer experience, admitted that the company “should have explained more clearly why this feature was rolled out.” Jensen has now confirmed that Sony will not actively listen to voice chats when the feature launches next month with the PS5, according to The Verge.
“Its sole purpose is to assist in the reporting of inappropriate behavior, including actions that violate our Community Code of Conduct,” she wrote. “Please note that this feature does not actively monitor or eavesdrop on your conversations – never – and this feature is strictly reserved for reporting online abuse or harassment.” However, the company had said that the feature will continuously record the last five minutes of every private voice chat. This can help any user facing harassment or something they believe is violating Sony’s rules on player behavior by submitting a clip of up to 40 seconds for the company’s moderation team to review. That includes 20 seconds of the potentially offensive behavior as selected by the user, with 10 seconds before and 10 seconds after the selected segment for added context.
“These reports can be submitted directly through the PS5 console and sent to our Consumer Experience team for moderation, who will then listen to the recording and take action if necessary. Some of the reports submitted are not valid, and our team will use this as an opportunity to provide guidance and training, ”explained Jensen. She went on to say that there will not be the option to opt out of voice chat recording because Sony wants “all users to feel safe playing with others online, not just those who choose to enable it.” (ANI)
