American electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla Inc is “very close” to achieving level 5 autonomous driving technology, CEO Elon Musk said Thursday, referring to the ability to navigate roads without any driver input. “I am confident that level 5 or essentially full autonomy will take place and I think this will happen very soon,” Musk said in a video message comments at the opening of the annual World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai .
“I am confident that this year we will complete the basic level 5 autonomy functionality.” Car manufacturers and technology companies, including Alphabet Inc Waymo and Uber Technologies, are investing billions in the autonomous driving industry.
However, industry insiders have said it will take time for the technology to be ready and the public to fully rely on autonomous vehicles. The California-based automaker is currently building cars with an autopilot assistance system for the autopilot.
Tesla is also developing new heat projection or cooling systems to enable more advanced computers in cars, Musk said. Industry data showed that Tesla sold nearly 15,000 Model 3 sedans made in China last month.
Tesla has become the most valued automobile manufacturer when its shares hit a record high and the market capitalization exceeded that of former leader Toyota Motors Corp.
