News Highlights: The US deploys new powers to block Chinese technology
The US Trade Department has drafted new rules to make it easier for the federal government to prevent Americans from importing technology from China and other US adversaries that it decides could threaten national security.
The new rule, which covers software such as that used in critical infrastructure and hardware, including drones and surveillance cameras, gives the trade secretary new powers to issue licenses or block imports.
While it also applies to technology imports from Iran, Russia, North Korea, Cuba and Nicolás Maduro’s Venezuelan regime, its main impact has focused on China – the latest in a series of actions in the government’s last days -Trump, intended to push Beijing.
The rule goes into effect in 60 days and implements an order signed by Mr Trump in 2019 to protect the US supply chains related to communication technology and services.
