Cyberpunk 2077 had a very strange release, as it was delayed by years while at the same time being rushed. The game was too ambitious for its own good, which led to so many bugs and glitches that it made millions of gamers demand refunds, and Sony even removed it from the PlayStation Store.
CD Projekt Red caught quite a bit of backlash after Cyberpunk 2077 debuted in a broken state, and internet memers had a field day with it.
It made for not only one of the most infamous video game releases of all time, but one of the most memed to death video games in history, too. Between making fun of all of the glitches, criticizing the release strategy, and having way too much fun with the over-the-top player customization options, the memes are almost as entertaining as playing the game.
Johnny Silverhand In Skate 3
One of the biggest selling points of Cyberpunk 2077 leading up to its release was just how involved Keanu Reeves was. Cyberpunk is one of the many video games Reeves has appeared in, but he’s never been so associated with a game than he has with 2077. In the game, Reeves plays Johnny Silverhand, has long dark locks, and wears a black vest. One gamer hilariously created a character in Skate 3 that looks almost identical to Silverhand.
The Matrix Meets Cyberpunk
There is absolutely no doubt that CD Projekt Red was clearly influenced by many different Keanu Reeves projects. The character’s name is likely based on Johnny Utah from Point Break, and the character looks like if John Wick smoked way too many cigarettes.
But, one gamer makes light of one glitch by comparing it to the biggest Keanu Reeves movie of them all, The Matrix. The cigarette is clearly supposed to be in Silverhand’s hand, but it’s floating in the air in front of his face. The gamer claims it isn’t a glitch, instead being done through the power of thought, just like Neo.
Regina George Gamers can say what they want about Cyberpunk 2077, and most of it is probably justified, but there’s no denying just how dense the customization gets when it comes to suiting and booting the playable characters.
But, one Twitter user has found a fantastic and surprising parallel between the sci-fi video game and the 2000s comedy Mean Girls. In the movie, Regina George’s wardrobe malfunction looks a lot like one of the wardrobe options in the game, and the bra and tank top color combo is definitely available in Cyberpunk. 7
Enjoying The Game Despite The Bugs
The bugs and performance issues are what held the game back from being game of the year material, and, depending on what platform the game was played on, it was almost unplayable. Though the bugs are being fixed by CD Projekt Red slowly but surely, there are some fans of the game that welcome the bugs. Using an adorable pug to mock the gamers who aren’t able to enjoy the game as much as them, it’s almost antagonizing. 6
Being Removed From The PlayStation Store
Very shortly after its release, when all of the in-game problems were coming to light from players, everyone who had bought the game digitally on the PlayStation Store understandably wanted refunds. After the uproar, Sony eventually removed the game from the store to avoid any more problems, but there are a select few who think it should have stayed on there. This hilarious meme, which brilliantly uses SpongBob SquarePants screenshots, points the finger at the hypocrites who demanded a refund and then got angry at Sony for removing it from the store.
The Game Wasn’t Delayed, But Was Released Decades Ahead Of Schedule This user makes light of the game’s name and that it came out decades early, pretending that the title has the same format as FIFA or Madden games where the year of its release is in the title. What makes it even funnier is that the game was actually delayed by years.
