The apps that use the most data on your phone have been revealed

Leading mobile phone reseller Buymobiles.net decided to look into this topic and compiled some handy stats. They figured out the average use time of many of the most popular apps and then dug into how much data slurpage that equals out to. For example, video-heavy TikTok used 740MB for an average daily use of 53 minutes. That works out to roughly 840MB per hour of use. By comparison, Snapchat only needs 80MB for the average amount of use on that app – which is 30 minutes. Which works out to 160MB per hour – considerably less than TikTok.

There’s a good chance you have a lot of apps on your phone. But, while you tap and swipe your way through them, how much data are they sucking up? Of course, the answer is contingent on how frequently you use the apps in question. Maybe Snapchat is your thing, or maybe TikTok is your jam. But, sooner or later, those little icons on your home screen will be sapping your data allowance in some way.

Digging deeper, the company compared Facebook and Twitter’s respective apps. ‘Both platforms boast a similar layout and types of content. You get a mixture of images, videos and text-only posts on a feed that you scroll through,’ the team explained. ‘Despite this, Twitter actually uses 160MB of data per hour than Facebook does. We averaged that typical users spend roughly 145 minutes a day.

‘Don’t worry, we did the math, so you don’t have to. This means the typical Twitter user would drain 870MB compared to Facebookers who would use 242MB in the same time.’ If you’re more of a visual person, don’t worry – the kind folks at Buymobiles.net laid it out in a handy infographic. Well, for starters it means you can squeeze more value out of your package. Most phones will let you place time limits on app usage to help you manage your time better.

Alternatively, you can stroll into your next phone contract decision armed with a bit more knowledge about how you go about spending your data. Jess Canning, Mobile Phone Expert at Buymobiles told Metro.co.uk: ‘It’s been very interesting to see how the most popular apps match up against each other in terms of data usage.’ Know your data limits before it comes time to sign that new contract (Getty). ‘These apps are a part of our everyday lives and in learning about how much data they use, we’re hoping our customers can choose a tariff plan that’s perfect for them.

‘Avid TikTok users will need a hefty amount of data to use the app at their leisure, likewise with the majority of video streaming platforms like YouTube. ‘We offer a number of unmissable prices on the best handsets out there, with data allowances to suit each of our customers and this research is a great way of ensuring they have enough each month.’
