The cell phone and vehicle of a missing man from Vero Lake Estates have been discovered; 'dirty play' is suspect in your absence

An update from the agency Wednesday evening said detectives were still trying to learn what caused Spencer’s death. A statement from Sheriff Eric Flowers described the death as a homicide saying Spencer’s family had a “loved one lost to violence.” Flowers said in a Wednesday morning press briefing posted on Facebook that drug use was thought to be involved in his disappearance. Records show Spencer’s mother reported him missing Tuesday and that she last saw him at their home in the 9300 block of 87th Street Sunday afternoon.

COUNTY OF INDIAN RIVER — After a missing Vero Lake Estates man’s body was discovered Wednesday afternoon, detectives arrested one suspect in connection with his killing, according to Sheriff’s Office officials. According to the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office, the body of John Robert Spencer Jr., 41, was discovered after a two-day search thanks to information provided by a guy suspected in his death. Scott Hodges, 43, of the 8600 block of 95th Avenue, has been charged with first-degree murder and possession of stolen items, according to jail records.

A deputy states in the report he was called to speak with Spencer’s mother at Hodges’ residence in the 8600 block of 95th Avenue just over a quarter mile west of their home where his vehicle was parked . Spencer’s mother told the deputy in the report she had his phone which she said “was unusual” for him to be without. Officials first announced Spencer’s disappearance Tuesday and said he was reported missing by a family member who told deputies he had not been seen at his Vero Lake Estates home in days. The agency then released information Wednesday, however, stating detectives had since learned Spencer was last seen Tuesday afternoon at Hodges’ home. Hodges is a licensed local real estate agent, according to state records. A spokesperson announced no further updates were available Wednesday.
