The series reboot was a critical and commercial success, winning multiple Game of the Year awards and selling over 10 million copies. Unlike previous entries in the long-running series, which were inspired by Greek mythology, God of War is loosely based on Norse mythology. Its sequel was announced via a brief teaser last September for release on PS5 in 2021, although nothing more has been heard of the project since.
The studio first announced in January that it was hiring an art director for an as-yet unannounced game, and last month job listings for more roles started to appear. This latest listing is the first to explicitly refer to a fantasy setting, however. Meanwhile, one of the job requirements involves “strong design skills with the ability to render realistic believable fantasy-based characters, creatures, and props using contemporary industry standard tools and techniques”.
Santa Monica Studio is currently working on a new God of War, the follow-up to 2018’s PS4 exclusive action-adventure game. Among the various responsibilities listed, one reads: “Develop and maintain strong creative and collaborative partnerships across subject areas to help further develop the in-game characters, visual language, and rule sets for fantasy-based worlds.”
Source PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan refused to comment last year on whether God of War Ragnarök will be released for PS4 as well as PS5.
