The board of directors of the Internet Association for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICAAN) has rejected the sale of the public interest register to private equity firm Ethos.
Since 2003, PIR has operated the generic top-level domain (gTLD) #ORG as a non-profit organization, along with six other gTLDs. In accordance with the gTLD Registry Agreements, ICANN must approve or reject the proposed change of control, the deadline for which is May 4, 2020.
Suggestion For You:
Upon completion of its assessment, the ICANN Board considers that the public interest is best served by denying consent due to several factors creating unacceptable uncertainty about the future of the third largest gTLD registry.
Good news for public organizations with #ORG websites. We don’t need any other private company to raise prices.
See: After all, the ORG domain is not sold to a private entity
