Varjo Joins Forces with US Army as High-End VR Technology Partner

The US Army has recently turned to the Finnish XR company Varjo for their expertise in virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). Varjo’s high-resolution VR/AR headsets will be utilized for pilot training in the Reconfigurable Virtual Collective Trainer (RVCT) aerial program. This collaboration aims to provide mixed reality training scenarios specifically designed for Apache, Chinook, and Blackhawk helicopter pilots.

Varjo has long been recognized for its high-end VR headsets, which are known for their exceptional resolution, making them ideal for simulations. Last summer, the Finnish manufacturer announced a “maximum immersion racing simulation” utilizing their Varjo Aero VR headset. In order to develop these mixed reality training programs for US pilots, Varjo is partnering with Cole Engineering to customize the software and hardware components of the simulator to deliver an immersive XR experience.

The chosen headset for this initiative is the Varjo XR-3 Focal Edition. With its remarkable resolution and video pass-through technology, pilots will be able to immerse themselves in a fully interactive training environment where they can engage with physical controls in real-time. The US military hopes that by incorporating Varjo’s cutting-edge technology into their pilot training programs, they can enhance efficiency and reduce Strikingly defense training costs. Seppo Aaltonen, Varjo’s commercial director, believes that mixed reality technologies have the potential to increase training flexibility and adaptability to any operating environment.
