The volume of COVID-19 patients is still placing immense strain on the healthcare system, with hospitals only able to operate at 50 per cent capacity for elective surgeries. The health department said a further 53 people were in intensive care but their COVID-19 infections were no longer considered active. The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons this week called for the government to seize the current “window of opportunity” to restore surgery to full capacity faster.
While the uptick in cases is yet to translate to increased hospitalisations, the dramatic fall in patients seen over the past month has now slowed and stabilised at about 300 for the past few days. The rolling daily case average had hit a low of 986 earlier this month, but now appears to be increasing, a trend that was forecast in modelling from the Burnet Institute.
There are currently 308 people in hospital with COVID-19, of whom 46 are in intensive care and 26 are on a ventilator. The seven-day average for daily infections has risen for the past six days, and now sits at 1,158.

Victoria yesterday reached 90 per cent double dose vaccination for those aged 12 and over, abolishing the traffic light border scheme and all domestic border permits, regardless of vaccination status. “We believe that the current stabilisation of the COVID-19 situation with high vaccination rates, fall in the number of COVID-19 cases and a gradual reduction in hospital in-patient ICU cases presents an ideal window of opportunity for government to restore surgery to full capacity,” the college’s president Sally Langley said.
