MSU Names John Walters Director of Office of Technology Management
STARKVILLE, Miss.— Mississippi State University has announced the appointment of John Walters as the new director of the Office of Technology Management. A seasoned entrepreneur and software executive, Walters brings a wealth of experience to his new role, which involves leading the university’s efforts to turn cutting-edge research into real-world impact.
Walters, a two-time MSU alumnus, officially assumed the position this month. He comes to MSU from Austin, Texas, where he was community engagement manager for Procurated, Inc., a Washington, D.C.-based startup that helps government procurement officials find and evaluate suppliers.
“Every day, MSU researchers develop new tools that will positively impact our world, and the Technology Management Office plays an important role in ensuring our discoveries reach their full potential,” said Julie Jordan, vice president of research and development at MSU Economics. “Technology transfer is also a key part of our economic development strategy as we work to grow Mississippi’s innovation-based economy.”
Walters earned his bachelor’s degree in marketing from MSU and then went on to earn his Master of Business Administration with a concentration in finance and economics. He has remained connected to his alma mater by serving as a mentor to technology startups through the advisory board of the MSU Center for Entrepreneurship and Extension.
“I am thrilled to take on the role of director of the Office of Technology Management at Mississippi State University,” said Walters. “Together, we will forge partnerships with companies, license MSU’s cutting-edge technologies and drive the creation of spin-off companies, contributing to the economic development of the state of Mississippi and beyond.”
Prior to joining MSU, Walters co-founded and served as Executive Vice President of Periscope Holdings, Inc., a technology startup that became a leading e-procurement solutions company serving state and local governments. He also held key management roles at Stage 3 Separation, LLC before returning to Periscope Holdings until its acquisition in 2021 by mdf commerce.
The Office of Technology Management operates MSU’s broad portfolio of technologies available for licensing. As a catalyst for technological advancement, the office bridges the gap between academia and industry while fostering a culture of entrepreneurship and collaboration.
