Smart Unlock is one of the many useful features included with Android. It enables you to keep your smartphone unlocked while connected to a Bluetooth accessory and in a secure location. When used with a smartwatch, the Smart Unlock’s security is called into question because it keeps the smartphone unlocked even when you aren’t wearing it.
Google demonstrated the Wear OS Watch Unlock feature at CES 2023 to address this issue. However, new information from sources indicates that Wear OS Watch Unlock will not replace Smart Unlock. In fact, Smart Unlock will continue to exist under the name “Extend Unlock.” Strings discovered in the most recent Google Play services version 23.03.13 indicate that Watch Unlock is an upgrade over Smart Lock.
It has also been revealed that Smart Unlock will be rebranded as Extend Unlock and will continue to be available. It’s surprising that Google intends to keep Smart Unlock after demonstrating Watch Unlock.
Wear OS Watch Unlock appears to unlock the Android phone or tablet when a connected Wear OS 3.0 device is brought close to it. This will work for Samsung Chromebooks as well as other Chromebooks. The wearable must be unlocked, and you will receive an on-watch notification that auto-unlock has begun. You will also be able to quickly lock the phone. Your watch will display the phrase “Unlocked by Watch.”
It should be noted that your smartphone or tablet must be running Android 13 in order to use the feature. Users can also enable the option by going to Settings » Security & privacy » More security settings. Watch Unlock will be listed under Smart Unlock, and you must choose your wearable from the list.
