WMG Academy Coventry pupils will each receive a new laptop when they return to school

It means all pupils – regardless of background – will have the latest technology to access the Internet and learning platforms at school and at home.

AS CHILDREN headed back to school this week, Coventry’s WMG Academy handed out brand new laptops to every student.

The scheme sees all current and new students at the academy receiving an HP Chromebook, paid for by school funds.

Kate Tague, Chief Executive Officer of WMG Academy Trust, said: “It levels the playing field and means students are less likely to fall behind due to a lack of technology.

“Every child and young person deserves to have the same chances when they’re starting out in life and we’re doing all we can to ensure all students are equipped with the tools necessary for learning in the 21st century.”

“The pandemic has emphasised how important technology is in modern education.

Classwork and homework is set online and students can interact with teachers virtually as well as in person.

Lessons still take place in the academy, with a combination of traditional lessons and online activities.

Students will take their individual laptop home at the end of every day so they have access to their work at home. In total, almost 1,000 teenagers will benefit in the first year of the scheme, which will cost the Trust £200,000. Stringent safeguarding measures will be in place to ensure online safety at all times. Student Summer Flitcroft, 15, said: “It’s great to be in an academy that’s at the forefront of technology and putting its students first.

“It’s a really good idea because it’s making learning more accessible for everyone.” Bullivant Media Logo
