Women's lacrosse advances to MAC Freedom Championship Game with 13-9 win over Misericordia

Stevens advances to the MAC Freedom Championship, where the Ducks will face top-seeded FDU-Florham for the second straight season. The Devils defeated Lycoming 23-3 earlier today on the other side of the bracket. FDU-Florham has won eight of the last 11 conference titles. Genevieve Montanye and Michelle Torzilli each had a pair of goals and an assist for Misericordia, who saw its two-game winning streak come to an end in dropping to 10-7 on the season. The contest was a rematch of last year’s MAC Freedom semifinal, which also saw the Ducks victorious.

Stevens Institute of Technology’s women’s lacrosse team defeated Misericordia University 13-9 in a MAC Freedom semifinal game at the DeBaun Athletic Complex on Wednesday. Junior Zoe Cook scored five goals, three of which came in the game-defining third quarter. For the Ducks, who won their fourth straight and improved to 16-2 on the season, first-year Emily Smart had a career night with two goals and four assists, and senior Camryn Rogers recorded her 14th hat trick of the season. Stevens’ 16 victories are the most for the programme since 2011 and tie for second-most in programme history.

Junior Maddie Schmidt had two goals and an assist and first-year Alison Lax also found the back of the net for the Ducks, who have scored in double figures every game this season. Senior Maeve McGovern and sophomore Emily Leiby each had an assist to round out the Ducks’ offensive contributions. Senior Lauren Cunniff matched a season high with 13 saves to earn the victory in the cage. The Montgomery, New Jersey native has stopped 10 or more shots nine times this season and leads the conference with an 8.10 goals-against average. Maggie McGovern made seven saves in defeat for Misericordia.

The Ducks broke the game open in the third quarter, scoring the first six goals of the frame to break open a 4-4 tie. Smart began the run on the Ducks’ first possession of the quarter, with Cook scoring each of the next three goals to push the lead to four. Cook’s five-goal evening brought the Princeton, New Jersey native across the 100-point threshold during her time at Stevens. Goals from Rogers and Schmidt followed before Torzilli and Montanye connected for consecutive goals to briefly slow the Ducks down. Smart netted her 11th of the year to return offensive momentum to the Ducks and Schmidt beat McGovern with just 18 seconds left in the quarter for what would prove to be an important insurance goal.

Not just showing off their prowess in the offensive zone, the Ducks maintained possession for nearly the first eight minutes of the quarter. Misericordia successfully cleared the ball once in the first six-and-a-half minutes before quickly turning it over and the Ducks won the first seven draw controls of the quarter. Misericordia would attempt to claw back into the game with three goals in the fourth quarter, however, the Ducks responded by winning each of the draw controls that followed the Cougars’ markers to prevent Misericordia from sustaining any offensive pressure. Rogers scored on a free-position goal to provide the final margin of victory. Rogers’ three-goal outing moved the Branchburg, New Jersey to 77 goals on the year, seven shy of matching the program record for goals in a single season.

The Ducks were able to convert four of their seven free-position shots, with Rogers going a perfect 2 for 2, while Smart and Cook also scored from the eight-meter mark. Conversely, Stevens held Misericordia to 0 for 4, with Cunniff recording a pair of saves. Stevens’ aggressive play in the midfield resulted in nine unforced Misericordia turnovers. Senior Meredith Conlin joined Schmidt in causing two turnovers, while Cook and junior Lauren Malicki each had one. After Misericordia held a 7-3 advantage in draw controls in the first half, the Ducks took control of the circle in the second half, winning 13 out of a possible 16 times. Cook and Rogers combined for 11, while Schmidt, senior Natalie Fitzpatick and senior Morgan Westerby each had one. Torzilli and Alyssa Delgadillo each had three to lead the Cougars.

Stevens finished 20 for 24 on clears, although the Ducks were perfect in both the second and third quarters. Each team was issued two cards on the evening. Up Next: Women’s Lacrosse will head to Madison, New Jersey on May 7 to take on top-seeded FDU-Florham in the MAC Freedom Championship.
