Following today’s big reveal, a company spokesperson confirmed to The Verge that Xiaomi has “no plan to actually put them on sale.” For now, the Xiaomi Smart Glasses are little more than a comprehensive concept; an advanced look at the future of wearables, complete with MicroLED optical waveguide technology.
Xiaomi has unveiled a pair of smart glasses—which the electronics firm doesn’t intend to release them any time soon.
A no-brainer for Xiaomi, MicroLED allows for a more compact display, easier screen integration, higher pixel density, and a longer lifespan, according to the company’s blog announcement. The monochrome display, meanwhile, allows the eye to safely perceive digital content, even in harsh direct sunlight.
“All this is done inside a single lens, instead of using complicated multiple lens systems, mirrors, or half mirrors as some other products do,” Xiaomi said. “Optical waveguide technology significantly reduces device size and weight, and therefore allows smart glasses to approach the form factor of traditional glasses.” The specs reportedly weigh only 51 grams.
The black Top-Bar frames are designed to fit in, with hidden features like an AR-friendly display and built-in 5-megapixel camera that snaps photos and translates text. More than a “second screen” for your smartphone, Xiaomi Smart Glasses were conceived as a “smart terminal with independent operating capability,” able to display notifications, make calls, navigate, and more right before your eyes. A microphone and translating algorithm also let the wearer transcribe audio in real time.
The glasses—which house a quad-core ARM processor, battery, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modules—act as an independent Android device that doesn’t need to be tethered to a smartphone. Xiaomi’s concept comes days after Facebook and Ray-Ban launched Stories smart glasses, which pack audio and camera features (but no augmented reality) into a pair of unassuming frames.
