Oppo R7s Review

With their latest smartphone release, OPPO is looking to bolster their mid-range portfolio with yet other variants of the OPPO R7, with the new addition to the series falling in between the original and the big R7 Plus, at least in terms of size. The R7s has the same sleek metal unibody, the gentle arcs towards its display edges, the excellent fit and finish – an overall aura of superiority.

Oppo R7s design

The R7s’ design is one of its stronger points. The OnePlus 2, for eg, can’t boast the same unibody metal chassis design as the Oppo. It’s thin too, at just 7.5mm thick, which is the similarly as Huawei’s Mate S, 0.4mm thicker than an iPhone 6s, or 0.1mm thinner than an iPhone 5s.

From a distance, if you look, you could be forgiven for thinking you were looking at the front of an older generation iPhone, but then that’s a judgement that can be levelled at some other devices too – and so hardly holds the R7s back.

Taking a look around the device, the volume rocker and power button are on opposite sides, with both being within comfortable reach. The buttons more feel solid and offer a good amount of tactile feedback, and is another positive indication of OPPO’s focus on design.

Oppo R7s display

The Oppo R7s Super AMOLED display size sits in between the R7 and R7 Plus, at 5.5-inches. It has a 1,080 x 1,920 pixels Full HD resolution, giving us a pixel density of 401ppi. Like the other phones in the R7 series, the R7s phone own a premium full metal build. It also has a 2.5D Arc Edge screen, which curves the glass edges to give the user a great grip on the smartphone.

Performance and hardware

Oppo R7s performance and hardware

The OPPO R7s comes with an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 processor, clocked at 1.5 GHz, and backed by the Adreno 405 GPU and 4 GB of RAM. This processing package is the equal as what is view with its siblings, save for the benefit of an additional gig of RAM that the R7s enjoys.

All from opening, closing, and switching between apps, to multi-tasking and gaming are handled by the R7s very well, and save for a few falter in animations here and there, the overall experience stays easy.

Oppo R7s camera

The Oppo R7s comes with a 13-megapixel Samsung ISOCELL 3M2 rear digicam. It comes with an f/2.2 aperture, making it able to taking well-lit photos in lower light conditions. The camera comes with a few add-ons for a better photo-taking experience. The R7s has a Hybrid autoFocus, which is a combination of Phase Detection Autofocus and Contrast autofocus techniques. The rear camera holds shooting in RAW format, as well as an Ultra-HD Mode, where it uses the 13-megapixel rear camera to allow a 50-megapixel image. The 8-megapixel front camera uses an Omnivision camera module.

The Oppo R7s comes with a large 3,070 mAh battery, made even better with VOOC Flash Charge. Oppo claims that their proprietary fast-charging way is established can charge from 0% to 75% in 30 minutes, and up to 90% in 50 minutes, as well as having enough for 2 hours’ worth of talk-time with 5 minutes of charging.

Oppo R7s verdict

Overall the Oppo R7s is a solid phablet with a nice build, a crisp display, excellent performance, long battery life, and a capable camera. There are some useful software features, like one-handed mode, which shorten the screen so things are more easily reachable; and automatic memory cleanup, which closes and optimises background processes after the phone is asleep for 5 minutes.
