Oppo R7s review

Introduction

Oppo has announced its first smartphone sporting 4GB of RAM – the Oppo R7s – at the GITEX 2015 event in Dubai. The Oppo R7s is the latest gadget to join the R5 and the R7 clan, the latest device tasked to help the company move up in the crowded mobile device segment. Oppo’s R7s is an upgraded version of the plane R7, having pros like a 4GB RAM and a 5.5-inch Full HD AMOLED display over its mother mannequin, which offers a 3GB RAM and a 5-inch display respectively. It also has double the internal memory at 32GB, with the nano SIM card slot doubling up as a microSD socket. The Oppo R7s will come with Android 5.1 Lollipop out of the box with ColorOS 2.1. For those who are wondering about the physical dimension of the Oppo R7s, the device measures 151.8 x 75.4 x 6.95 mm while weighing just 155 grams.

Design

Oppo R7s design

The R7s has the very sleek metal unibody, the gentle arcs towards its display edges, the exquisite fit, and finish – an overall aura of superiority. he only headline-worthy bump in the spec sheet is the 4GB of RAM – it’s still a lovely exclusive club and its members are mostly true flagships. If somehow the five-inch R7 was too small for you, and the 6-inch R7 Plus was too big, Oppo is giving you more choice with the 5.5-inch R7s. Aside from that, it’s the tried and true Snapdragon 615 running the show, and we know how Oppo is capable of extracting the best out of it. The 13MP digital camera setup with section detection autofocus can also be acquainted from the R7, as is the 8MP front-facer.

Display

Oppo R7s display

The Oppo R7s comes with a 5.5-inch full HD AMOLED display with 2.5D glass. The entire R7 lineup makes use of AMOLED, displays and the R7s is no different. The green pixels are twice as many as any of the other two colors, but they’re smaller in overall size. The maximum brightness level of Oppo R7s is good for an AMOLED unit (365nits) but in terms of color accuracy, there’s a lot left to be desired.

The screen has a resolution of 1,920 pixels by 1,080 pixels, making it a 1080p full HD screen. Display sharpness can be measured in the density of pixels per square inch of screen, and at 401 PPI, it’s 1.5 times sharperthan the average phone released in the past 12 months.

Camera

Oppo R7s camera

The R7s has a 13 megapixel rear camera, which will produce high-quality pictures. Its 8-megapixel front camera makes it a best choice for selfies. It can shoots1080p high definition video with its primary camera, which is second only to 4K in terms of recording quality. The Oppo R7s camera lens aperture maxes out at f/2.2 which is standard for smartphone cameras.

Battery

The Oppo R7s packs a 3,070mAh battery, which like its display diagonal, puts it in between the R7 (2,320mAh) and R7 Plus (4,100mAh). However, our R7s battery life test left us with mixed feelings. Much like the Oppo R7 and R7 Plus before it, the R7s excelled at 3G call endurance with just over 24 hrs before it called it a day. In video playback, the new R7s was best for 14 straight hours before it ran out of power – another nice rating.

Software

Oppo R7s OS

The R7s runs Android 5.1 Lollipop with Oppo’s heavily customized color OS 2.1 UI, drawing more influence from Apple’s iOS than from Google’s Material Design. All of the apps are arranged on the home screen and there’s no app drawer. In addition, the heavy skin makes an update to Android 6.0 Marshmallow less likely.

Processor and Memory

The Oppo R7s houses an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 MSM8939 system on a chip. R7s’s CPU runs at 1.5 GHz, which is a bit higher than average for a phone’s CPU. With 4 GB of RAM, the R7s has much more memory than other smartphones released in the past year.

Verdict

Oppo R7s verdict

Oppo R7s is a solid phablet with a nice build quality, good performance, a crisp display, long battery life, and a capable camera. It also comes with optional Moto Maker customizations and a mostly pure build of Android. Good thing then that its battery can last you for as long as 14 hours of video playback. If you tend to spend most of your time browsing, however, you may find the Oppo R7s lacking in stamina, at just 8 hours. We’ve seen Oppo do a great job of squeezing the most out of the Snapdragon 615 in the past, and it is done it again for the R7s.
