Description

It certainly has the specification to offer an excellent, bold gaming experience. It’s a 31.5in display with AMD’s FreeSync, DisplayHDR 600, and a 4K Ultra-HD resolution – and over 60 RGB LEDs. This display is designed for console players, but can of course also be used for PCs. The CG32UQ serves up a cartload of features that will appeal to gamers, but in some departments, the specification is somewhat weak. The basics are right. The 4K resolution implies you have a sufficient number of pixels to handle everything the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X can do – as well as the next generation of consoles.

It’s also good enough for high-end PC gaming. The density level of 140ppi is excellent – it keeps the games sharp. The VA display is the right choice because it should deliver vast levels of contrast. The Asus deploys DisplayHDR 600, which requires a screen to provide a brightness level of 600 nits and a black point of 0.1 nit – you’ll see the difference with HDR games. Crucially, DisplayHDR 600 also requires local dimming, which means it will have better contrast control than the entry-level DisplayHDR 400 protocol, which makes hardly any difference to games.

The CG32UQ, therefore, has quite a core specification, but that is not without problems. The 32in diagonal is significant in the context of PC monitors, but small compared to TVs. This screen is certainly not big enough for a living room. It’s better suited for a bedroom, a desk, or an office, but you have to take the size into account when sitting at a reasonable distance. The screen here is a bit grainy, which is noticeable when you sit close to the screen. The response time of 5ms is excellent for console gaming and most competitive scenarios, but sharp competitive gamers won’t be saturated. The AMD FreeSync implementation can also be improved.

Asus CG32UQ
Our Verdict
The Asus CG32UQ has a smart design, decent HDR, 4K resolution and great image quality, including huge contrast. It has impressive speakers, and even packaged in a number of RGB LEDs. However, the FreeSync implementation can do better, and the 32-inch format means it's not suitable for larger living rooms.
PROS
  • Fantastic contrast and good colors
  • Powerful speakers
  • Decent HDR options
CONS
  • Not large enough for living rooms
  • AMD FreeSync performance is only middling
