The Asus VG27AQ is a great monitor for gaming purposes. This monitor has a great resolution and size, a very low input delay, wide viewing angles, and excellent ergonomics.

TUF may be the entry-level model of Asus, but do not assume that the VG27AQ is inexpensive. This 27in IPS display has a 1440p Quad-HD resolution and AMD FreeSync 2 on board. The Asus has Nvidia G-Sync running at a standard speed of 144Hz, and the screen also works with AMD FreeSync 2. That means it can work with any AMD or Nvidia’s graphics card. The screen also has an overclocking function, which means it can run at a peak speed of 165Hz.
I haven’t seen any of the ghosts or fuzziness that can sometimes occur with overclocked displays, and the response times only increase by a small margin when using this overclocking mode – but the majority of users won’t be affected, even in competitive scenes. The Asus can only use that 165Hz refresh rate over DisplayPort, not HDMI. And, as always, you need a graphics card that can run games at 2,560 x 1,440 and at frame rates approaching 144fps or 165fps to get the most out of this panel.
That’s quickly done for esports, which tend to demand fewer graphics, but you need a powerful GPU to run single-player games at those speeds – something like an Nvidia’s RTX 2070 Super or an AMD Radeon RX 5700. The 165Hz refresh rate is linked to Asus’ ELMB-Sync function. That acronym stands for Extreme Low Motion Blur, and the Asus VG27AQ is the first time I see a screen that allows motion blur to work with G-Sync or FreeSync.
Previously, motion blur required fixed refresh rates, so it didn’t work with variable sync technologies. Activating ELMB works well, with smooth gaming and no sign of ghosts or cracks – and the screen looked incredibly sharp. It’s worth using this feature for fast, competitive games, and it adds some extra versatility to this display, but be aware that this new technology has only minimal impact when considered alongside the rest of this screen’s functions.
