Product is rated as #3 in category Monitors
The BenQ EX2780Q is a gaming monitor that has merged with a professional monitor, so it's equipped for a lot of things. The combination of a color-accurate, fast refreshing IPS panel and a strong speaker provides a strong entertainment experience, but some annoying HDR behavior is disappointing at this price point.
PROS:
  • 10-bit color depth
  • Worthy speakers
  • Jack of all trades
CONS:
  • Wonky HDR on PC
  • Basic stand

The high dynamic range (HDR) is popping up everywhere these days and offers the potential for brighter colors, deeper blacks, and brighter whites on both TVs and PC monitors. Over 4K, HDR represents a real step up in picture quality with content it supports. The only thing is that it has to be done right, not only with the content but also with the screen itself. Cheap or incomplete HDR implementations will let you down, but when it’s done right, it stands out.

An example of the latter is BenQ’s new EX2780Q monitor, which offers a vibrant HDR that’s a feast for the eyes. Combined with a bright IPS screen, 144Hz refresh rate, FreeSync, and a good pair of speakers, it’s a strong contender for one for the Best gaming displays on the market today. To get rid of it, the BenQ EX2780Q is perhaps The Best looking desktop display I’ve ever seen. Furthermore, it probably has The Best set of built-in speakers I’ve heard on a monitor so far.

The kicker is that all of this is packed in a relatively modest, albeit handsome, metal frame. I’m so used to seeing game monitors with colorful, aggressive blooms and RGB lighting that I didn’t know what to consider when I unpacked the EX2780Q. BenQ seems content to let the display and speakers speak for themselves. Since I am one of those people who prefer my monitors to be monitors without any distracting flair, I think that’s fine, although I recognize that some people disagree.

While I can go on for days about the HDR experience, there are other things I like about the EX2780Q. The 144Hz refresh rate is absolutely amazing on a gaming monitor in this price category, so it’s great to see it here. If you have a decently powerful gaming rig, you’ll be able to push the frame rates to the point of buttery smooth.
