The Asus ZenFone 8 Flip review

Not long ago, the Taiwanese company ASUS introduced the 8th generation of its flagship Zenfone series, which included two models: the base Zenfone 8 and the Zenfone 8 Flip. the flip camera in ASUS smartphones debuted a few years ago with the Zenfone 6 series, then continued with the Zenfone 7 and have survived to this day. This is a pleasant surprise, as non-standard design solutions are not always reincarnated in the next generations of smartphones. Remember pop-up camera’s, who eventually disappeared?

Compared to the Zenfone 7 generation, where both models have a rotating camera mechanism, the brand decided this year to give the user a choice – the line includes both a classic and a more exotic model. We will get to know the latter today.

The newer model ditches the Pro tag and is armed with less best-in-class specs, but it’s still a hugely capable device.

And it still has the incredible and unique motorized flip-up camera system, which means your selfies are taken in the exact same high quality as your behind camera captures the image.

A more compact 5.9-inch ZenFone 8 is also available. This comes without the flip-up camera but includes a brighter 120Hz display with Gorilla Glass Victus, optical image stabilization in general camera and a headphone port.

The ZenFone 8 Flip is an almost identical glass and aluminum crafted as the ZenFone 7 Pro.

You have it in silver and black. My rating model was the latter.

It’s noticeably heavier and thicker than other flagships, but feels sturdier and more robust in the hand. I appreciate the extra weight, but others may not. Asus ZenFone 8 Flip is robustly made of premium materials. The motor for the flipup camera has been improved for finer angle control.

Safety features includes an in-display fingerprint reader and face unlock, but I disabled the latter because it prevents the flip-up camera to work. The fingerprint sensor is faster and consistently reliable.

One of the main advantages of this phoneis singular camera system is that there is no front lens embedded in the screen.

So the 6.67-inch ZenFone 8 Flip is a rare full-screen handset. There are only the thinnest bezels on the sides and there is Gorilla Glass 6 protection.

If only every smartphone didn’t have a notch, punch-hole or dual punch-hole camera obscure the view. ZenFone 8 Flip’s screen is bright, colorful and responsive. The screen is exactly the same as last year’s model. This means you get an FHD+ AMOLED panel with a 90Hz refresh rate, a 200Hz sampling rate, and a response time of one millisecond.

It might be disappointing that such a full-screen experience doesn’t have a 120Hz or 144Hz refresh rate, but the 90Hz is still smooth and fluid.

It’s great for watching HDR10+ content with a peak brightness of 1000 nits. The brightness averages 500 nits when not viewing HDR content.

As mentioned above, this camera system means your selfies are captured in the same high quality as your behind camera Pictures.

That includes 4K video capabilities that should particularly appeal to vloggers.

The system consists of a 64MP Sony IMX686 wide angle camera with a fast f/1.8 aperture and dual PD autofocus; a 12MP, f/2.2, 113-degree, ultra-wide Sony IMX363 sensor and an 8MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom.

The main lens can capture video on: up up to 8K at 30 frames per second (fps).

None of the lenses has optical image stabilization (OIS) but does have electronic stabilization (EIS). Images captured on the Asus ZenFone 8 Flip are always pleasing. Overall, the results of all three shooters are consistently satisfactory, although they lack the finesse and computational photography savvy of Apple’s iPhone 12 series, Google’s Pixel 5 and Samsung S21 series.

Several shooting modes are available in the responsive and intuitive native camera app. I’m a fan of the Pro mode, which includes bracketing with different exposures and the ability to save custom shooting presets for quick access.
