The Review on Amazon Echo Show 5 (2021)
Amazon’s smallest smart display is a great choice if you want a smart bedside device. Video calling is offered, but that essential privacy shield provides security. But it’s really Alexa and its myriad of skills that make this affordable connected device shine. Read in full verdict

Great bedside device All Alexa’s skills Good sound for the size
Touch response is slow User interface is not the best Low resolution has no future potential Can dim better at night
Since the launch of the original Echo Show, Amazon has expanded its offerings in the smart display category — a category that, let’s face it, Amazon actually created.
For 2021, the Echo Show 5 will enter its second generation, with minor updates to the version that first went on sale in 2019. Design and build
Dimensions: 148 x 86 x 73 mm / Weight: 410 g New color option: Deep Sea Blue Recycled materials
The Echo Show 5 is exactly the same size and scale as the previous model. So it would be hard to tell the old Show 5 from the new Show 5, except there is now a Deep Sea Blue color to join the black or white options. pocket ribbon
The only design differences are that the camera opening in the bezel of the screen is now square instead of circular, and the 3.5mm audio output on the back of the old Echo Show 5 has now been removed – so there’s no option to connect to existing speaker equipment here .
Otherwise, the big change in this device is the shift to using more recycled materials in its construction. That gives this device a greener footprint as Amazon tries to make its operation a little more environmentally friendly.
There is a rubber foot on the bottom of the Echo Show 5 to reduce surface vibration and keep it firmly in place. The controls are all on the top, with a physical privacy slider for the camera (so you can hide out of sight at will), along with volume and mute button. pocket ribbon
The final consideration is that this Echo Show – like the Show 8 – has a wedge-shaped design, meaning it leans back with the screen. This gives visibility when standing on a desk, table or surface; it is a corner well suited for viewing and making calls when you are sitting at your desk, for example.
Overall, the Echo Show 5 is affordable, but the quality is decent. Since most of the design is covered in fabric, there is little plastic to look at. About the only design niggle we have is that the bezel is still quite wide – but that’s on par with Amazon’s tablets, so it feels like it’s a family design, rather than Amazon being just lazy. Display and sound
5.5-inch touchscreen display 960 x 480 resolution 1.65-inch speaker
The name of this device is derived from the screen size. At 5.5 inches, the Echo Show 5 is barely massive, so it’s best placed on a desk or bedside table. The screen is really too small for a full room experience – you’ll want the Show 8 or Show 10 for that. Zaklint
The display is your interface to the visual side of Alexa, and very much mirrors the experience you’ll find on the other Show models, designed to give you easily digestible information. That goes as far as playing video – from Netflix or Amazon – but we doubt many people would settle for watching movies on such a small device.
It loses out to the Nest Hub devices by not offering a native YouTube app (although it can be played through the browser) and YouTube is the kind of service that’s useful for watching those ad hoc videos.
The Show 5’s display isn’t up to the quality you find on modern smartphones, dimming quite quickly from an angle, but again, at this price and on this type of device we can’t see that really matters. The resolution is also quite low, but it suits the large graphics it displays. This could limit more granular user interface ambitions in the future, as there isn’t much resolution to make things more granular if Amazon wanted to later.
