The Review on Amazon Echo Show 5 (2nd Gen)
A minor upgrade to Amazon’s compact smart display, the Amazon Echo Show 5 (2nd generation) is a great way to bring Alexa to your bedside table.
Alexa-centered homes be spoiled for choice when choosing the perfect smart speaker or display for every nook and cranny of the house. For many people, the vibrant 5.5-inch screen of the $119 Echo Show 5 (2nd Generation) would be the perfect addition to their nightstand, kitchen bench, or home desk.
As your budget expands, the $199 Echo Show 8 (2nd Gen) extra screen would probably be appreciated in the kitchen. The bed might just be the perfect place for the Amazon Echo Show 5 (2nd generation). That said, the only significant improvement over the 1st generation model is a: feature which you probably don’t want in the bedroom if you’re concerned about privacy.
With the Amazon Echo Show 5 (2nd generation), little has changed compared to its predecessor. Some will argue that this is not a bad thing. It’s hard to improve on such a great design – discussion of the merits of Alexa vs Google Assistant aside (I’m on Team Google)
The Echo Show 5’s flexible alarm clock can wake you up with traditional alarm sounds, with the option to slowly brighten the screen like the rising sun. Alternatively, you can choose to wake up to streaming music, Internet radio, news bulletins, a summary of your day, or your own custom morning routine. You can even hand strap the screen to the top to snooze the alarm and buy yourself a little longer in bed.
During the day, the screen can display the latest news and weather reports. By default, it floods you with pointless celebrity news items, but this is easily customizable. It can also scroll through your photo library when you import photos into Amazon Photos, taking you further into the Amazon ecosystem.
As with all Echo devices, the Show 5 puts Amazon’s smart assistant Alexa at your disposal. She can answer your questions, play video, check your agenda, operate smartly home gear and call your friends.
The latter brings us to the biggest difference between the Amazon Echo Show 5 (2nd generation) and Google’s closest equivalent in the Google Nest Hub (2nd generation). Not only does the Echo Show 5 feature a front camera, but the new 2nd generation model allows you to watch a live feed from a distance.
Amazon Echo Show 5 (2nd generation) Specifications Display 5.5-inch touchscreen with 960×480 pixels Dimensions 147.72 mm W × 85.95 mm H × 72.91 mm D Weigh 403 gm
Camera Front 2-megapixel microphones 2 far-field speakers 1 × 1.7-inch Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n/ac (2.4 and 5 GHz) Bluetooth A2DP Colors Charcoal, Glacier White and Deep Sea Blue
Amazon has done away with the 3.5mm audio output on the back, allowing you to connect the smart display to an external speaker. It is a feature that helps Amazon speakers differentiate themselves from their Google rivals, but realistically it probably won’t be missed. It is still possible to connect an external speaker via Bluetooth.
Also note that the micro USB port on the back of the Amazon Echo Show 5 (2nd generation) is a “service port” and is not intended for charging devices. It’s a shame Amazon couldn’t add a full-sized USB port to charge your smartphone without having to tether up another socket at the bedside.
At the top of the device you will find the standard three buttons: volume up and down, along with microphone mute, which also camera. When mute is on, an orange line appears at the bottom of the screen.
You can also slide over the physical lens cap to open the camera but not the microphone, so you can still talk to Alexa.
On the 2nd generation model, the front camera quality steps up from 1 to 2 megapixels. This makes a big difference to the picture quality for the person on the other end of a video call. Apart from this, the 2nd generation model does not upgrade the processor, screen or speaker, although all of them are still sufficient for the task at hand. entertainment
The small speaker packs a decent punch for its size when it comes to sound quality, but – like many Echo devices – it’s heavy bass. This affects the audio quality and makes Alexa a bit over the top and muffled. It’s fine for a clock radio, but won’t cut it to rock a larger space.
The Amazon Echo Show 5 (2nd generation) gives you access to Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify, TuneIn and iHeartRadio. Along with subscription music, it also lets you use podcasts, internet radio, and live radio simulations.
The screen is bright and vibrant, with excellent horizontal and vertical viewing angles in terms of image quality. You can watch Amazon Prime Video, Netflix and some catch-up services, but not YouTube (unless you start the Silk or Firefox browser). There is also no Chromecast equivalent for streaming video from other devices.
Not that you’d spend a lot of time watching movies and TV shows on a small 5.5-inch 960 x 480 pixel screen. You’re more likely to use it for watching news bulletins and perhaps perusing recipes in the kitchen.
