There really isn’t much bad to say in this Amazon Echo Show 8 (2nd Gen, 2021) review. It’s a smart Alexa display that fits in a kitchen or small living room. You will really be able to get the most out of your smart home with one of these.
You get all the benefits of Amazon’s own voice assistant, combined with a screen to control up even more information. By expanding what you can do with Alexa, the screen gives you more ways to control your smart home, make video calls, follow recipes, set timers, and even stream video. When it comes to the best smart speakers, you won’t get much better.

The first generation of the Echo Show 8 was released in 2019, and despite looking identical to the 2021 version with the same features and the same speaker hardware Amazon has made a few improvements worth knowing about.
First, they have the camera. What was once just a 1MP front camera is now 13 MP, which is a huge jump. Second, they are bumped up the processor from a 4-core MediaTek MT 8183 to an 8-core chip. It now matches that of the Amazon Echo Show 10.
One major design change isn’t immediately apparent, but Amazon has switched up the source of the materials used – the Amazon Echo Show 8 (2nd Gen, 2021) is ‘Climate Pledge Friendly’ meaning the device, cable and adapter are all made from 30% post-consumer recycled plastic, 100% post-consumer recycled fabric and 100% recycled die-cast aluminum.
Finally, they removed the 3.5mm audio port so you can only connect to it wirelessly.
A triangular shape measuring 200 x 135 x 99mm, the Amazon Echo Show 8 (2nd Gen, 2021) fits best in a corner of the kitchen or living room, it might be a little too big for most bedside tables. You can buy it in black or white. Unlike the smaller version, there is no blue colourway.
With an 8-inch display, the Amazon Echo Show 8 looks and feels like a small tablet. It has quite thick bezels in which the 13 MP . is accommodated camera, and at the top there is the microphone mute button, volume controls and the camera slider for privacy hatch.
With a resolution of 1280 x 800p, the screen is very bright, clear and easy to read. While you can technically stream video content from Prime Video, Netflix or YouTube, it doesn’t match the display quality of tablets like the Samsung Galaxy Tab S7+. I’d say you only want to watch TV on it when you’re busy with other tasks like cooking, rather than it being one of its main uses. I had it set up in the kitchen, where it turned out to be a great size to read content like recipes, weather and news. It also proved to be very fast and reliable to use, I had no issues with it not responding to my touch.
Institution up the smart display was quick and easy. You just plug it in, enter your Wi-Fi information on the touchscreen, followed by your Amazon account information. The screen was big enough for easy typing on it, although admittedly it would have been easier if you could have set it up up through your Alexa app like other Echo devices. Then you have full access to all smart features, including control over other smart devices you have set up up via Alexa such as lights or security cameras.
