The Review on Audio-Technica AT-LP60XBT

It looks a little dated and lacks a bit of sharpness, but there’s a lot to like about the Audio-Technica AT-LP60XBT – not least its warm, balanced soundstage and robust Bluetooth connection. For under $200 you can’t go wrong. In front of

In 1981 Cliff Richard scored a UK top five hit with the single Wired For Sound and with advancements in technology there was always a danger that the lyrics would one day become obsolete – along with the accompanying roller skating video.

Sure enough, 40 years later, the idea that music playback is only possible using wires seems somewhat laughable. Sure, the average audiophile will continue to praise the benefits of wired listening, but it’s no longer a necessity, with everything from headphones to speakers capable of receiving sound without wires.

Wireless turntables are now also a thing, of course, and in this review we’ll explore one such turntable – the Audio-Technica AT-LP60XBT. A cordless version of the fully automatic, belt-driven AT-LP60X, it is features in our guide to the best Bluetooth turntables – which isn’t bad considering it’s just £179 / $149.

If you’ve read our reviews of some of Audio-Technica’s other turntables, you’ll know all about the Japanese manufacturer’s eye for unique design. Forget the too-cool-for-school, “monochromatic record” look that most audio companies prefer, AT seems to prefer something with a little more “personality.” Who could forget the Audio Technica AT-LP120 with its almost garish glossy plinth or the Audio Technica AT-LP3 with its Rudolf-esque red-nosed tonearm?

The AT-LP60XBT is another with an interesting aesthetic, combining a smooth matte black plinth with a glossy aluminum platter. Frankly, it doesn’t exude a particularly premium vibe (it doesn’t help that it’s a lightweight 2.6kg), and some might even describe it as old-fashioned.

We don’t mind though – we actually prefer the colored variants, with the front of the turntable going white (AT-LP60XBT-WH) or red (AT-LP60XBT-RD), depending on your preference. We prefer the white version as it is more neutral, but if you feel like adding some vibrancy to your home decor, the red model certainly has something.

Since this is a fully automatic turntable, there are: buttons on the front for starting and stopping the turntable, changing speed (45 or 33 rpm) and raising/lowering the tonearm – and boy, those are those buttons pushable. At one point our roommate wondered why the music kept stuttering. Musical statues? No man, we just like to hit those buttons! Audio-Technica AT-LP60XBT turntable review: Features

As mentioned, the AT-LP60XBT is a wireless version of the audio company’s esteemed Audio-Technica AT-LP60X (in case you hadn’t guessed, the BT stands for Bluetooth). This means it can pair with speakers, headphones, or other wireless devices without having to drag cables across the floor (and we all know there’s nothing worse than tripping over a cord while in the middle of an air guitar solo).

The turntable also features a CSR BT chipset, meaning it can connect to devices that support the high-quality aptX codec, including Audio-Technica’s proprietary ATH-DSR9BT and ATH-DSR5BT headphones. By the way, should Sir Cliff’s aforementioned tune inspire you to reconnect to wired listening, you can also use the AT-LP60XBT wired; the turntable has a switchable phono preamp and also comes with a dual RCA output cable.

Of course, the debate over whether you should listen to your music wired or wirelessly is rather debatable if the turntable’s sound quality isn’t. up scratch. Audio-Technica has clearly done its best to tick this all-important box and equip the AT-LP60XBT with a range of accurate audio technology. Notable additions include a redesigned tonearm base and headshell, which are designed to improve tracking; a Dual Moving Magnet phono cartridge with a replaceable diamond stylus and an anti-resonance platter. Does all this make a little difference? It’s time to find out.
