The Review on Austrian Audio Hi-X65 Headphones
Amazing clarity, stereo field openness and articulate bass response + Truly comfortable + Low impedance – easy to drive on many playback devices + Detachable cables (1.2 and 3 m) and replaceable ear cups/headband cushion + Competitive price compared to comparable models from alternative studio brands (and much cheaper than many comparable hi-fi models)
– Extremely clear high-frequency response takes some getting used to – Loud/brash external noise due to open-back design
With astonishing transient response and an immersive stereo field, these open-back headphones are hard to beat for critical editing, checking mixes/masters and enjoying your favorite pre-recorded music unbridled. They’re pretty much perfect, except for the slightly exaggerated high frequency detail that makes some sources seem too bright in the mix.

After the dramatic shift of production in the US for the once Austrian brand AKG, some of its engineers left behind in Vienna defected and formed a new outfit, Austrian Audio. After gaining a large following for developing innovative OC series large-diaphragm microphones, the brand has turned its attention to headphones in recent years.
With on-ear and over-ear closed-back headphones already in the range, the open-back, over-ear Hi-X65s are designed with mixing and mastering in mind. Using the same 44mm driver as the two previous models, Austrian Audio aims to eliminate all resonances associated with closed sets with this new model. John Pickford described this in his MusicTech review of the Hi-X55 as a ‘cuppy’ midrange, so hopefully this set will sound a lot more natural.
Austrian Audio’s driver is developed and produced in-house, without parts being sourced from elsewhere. Promised features include faster-than-average transient response, strong frequency response linearity, plus extremely low levels of distortion across the spectrum that they claim cannot be matched by other brands. Unpacking the headphones is a lot of fun. Austrian Audio thinks seriously about the presentation of their products to maximize the sense of quality and prestige. It’s a feature that will appeal to hi-fi enthusiasts and studio technicians alike. Undoing a red Velcro fastener gives you access to the box and the headphone set is nestled in some foam cutouts. They are pleasant to hold out of the box and the metal headband is manually adjustable with reassuring clicks for feedback. Two detachable locking cables are included: one 1.2m for music on the go and one of 3m. They are both straight, uncoiled cables, which is a clear win in our book, and they follow the clever gray and black color scheme of the headset. The memory foam cups and headband are designed to provide comfort and ventilation during extended listening sessions and are user replaceable.
