The Review on Beats Studio Buds X
At a Glance Expert Review Pros
Quite affordable Extremely compact and comfortable Great music quality for the price
Noise cancellation is fine. Missing a few Apple-centric features
Poor microphone performance microfoon
Its compact size, comfort and excellent sound quality make it very attractive for the price. But iPhone users will find some useful Apple ecosystems features is missing, and the microphone quality could be better. It didn’t take long for Apple’s 2014 acquisition of Beats to bear fruit for iPhone users. Apple associates the Beats line with iPhones in ways that make sense, such as using the W1 and later the H1 chip in many Beats headphones and earbuds has many advantages, essentially turning the Beats line into a kind of side AirPods brand with different styling and sound characteristics.
The new Beats Studio Buds have a lot to offer, but they don’t contain the H1 chip found in the Powerbeats Pro or Solo Pro. You still get an Apple ecosystem features, but miss others. The comfort and sound quality are huge for the price, but Apple enthusiasts may want to consider whether the tradeoffs are worth it. Half way to AirPods
Beats products with the H1 chip get most of the same Apple ecosystem features AirPods do. They are recognized by your iPhone with a pop-upup instant pairing card, and can display the battery life of your headphones and case. They can instantly switch to other Apple devices signed in with the same Apple ID. You can share audio with two pairs of AirPods (or W1/H1-equipped Beats) from the same iPhone or iPad. You get spatial audio when you watch supported surround sound video or listen to Apple Music tracks with Dolby Atmos.
The lack of an Apple-made chip in the Beats Studio Buds leaves them in an inconvenient place where you get some of these features, but not everything. There is no iCloud sync to switch directly to other Apple devices. There is no spatial audio when watching video as they do not have the accelerometer/gyro needed for head tracking. There is no audio sharing. And there’s no in-ear detection, so your music won’t pause when you take out an earbud and start up again when you put it back. Beats Studio Buds Control Center Beats Studio Buds have noise canceling controls in the Control Center, just like AirPods.
In some ways, however, Beats Studio Buds work just like AirPods. You will still be paired directly with the info card and can see the battery status once paired. Spatial Audio works automatically in Apple Music (although you can force it with all headphones, so that’s okay). They integrate into Control Center like AirPods, with noise cancellation and transparency below the volume slider. You get hands-free “Hey Siri” support. They even support Find My like AirPods do.
It’s a strange mix of supported and unsupported Apple ecosystems features, but suffice it to say that if you use a lot of Apple products and services, AirPods Pro will give you more of that “Apple magic”. Better for Android users
If you are using an Android phone at least some of the time or share your earbuds with someone who does, the Beats Studio Pro may be a better fit than the W1/H1-equipped Beats products.
The case charges with USB-C instead of Lightning (there’s no wireless charging), and they support the new Google Fast Pair standard for easier connection. In addition to Apple’s Find My network, they also support Google’s Find My Device.
You may not get hands-free “Hey, Google” support, but this is still a more fully featured overall experience than you get with most modern Beats products on an Android phone. Design that disappears in your ears
I quite like the design of the Studio Buds. The charging case is about the same size as the AirPods Pro, much smaller than the Powerbeats Pro. The tops themselves are small, lightweight and extremely comfortable. Sponsored Content by Builder.ai Why Your Business Needs an App Without an app, you’re missing out on sales! They just slide right into your ear, with no stem sticking down and no big bulbous bump sticking out to stick to your winter hat. I was surprised to find that they didn’t get uncomfortable at all after a few hours of listening, and they stayed in my ears just fine as I skateboarded around my neighborhood and went for a little jog, although the fit did loosen up a bit as I sweated. They are splash and sweat resistant, but not waterproof.
I have a problem maintaining a comfortable fit for long periods of time with AirPods Pro, when the Studio Buds just disappear in my ears and never seem to need adjusting.
