The Review on Bluesound Powernode (N330)
It’s no secret that I love the quality and audio that Bluesound devices provide. Now with their latest offering of the Powernode, they enhance all aspects of the amplifier and make it an even more appealing offering for anyone who demands only the best from their audio equipment. Diving into the new Powernode (N330), it’s no wonder the company has been one of CGMagazine’s best audio products for many years, and if this year’s iteration has anything to offer, that trend isn’t going to end anytime soon. Design
If you hadn’t told me this was a different device, I wouldn’t have known at first glance. The new Powernode is remarkably similar to the previous iteration. The simple black or white plastic shell with rounded corners feels almost identical. But Bluesound has given this little box something new tricksOne of these is the touch volume control on the top of the device, proximity detection, along with some easily accessible presets that make it an overall more refined user experience. Looking at the back of the box, you’ll find the standard array of inputs, meeting most people’s needs for a good audio experience. With an HDMI, Ethernet, USB A, digital/analog audio input (3.5mm mini jack/optical combo), you should be able to connect up most equipment with ease. It too features speaker terminals (banana/screw mount terminals) along with a subwoofer (RCA) terminal for when you need to shake your floor. Unfortunately, there was no Photo preamp with the Powernode, so if you want to hook up your turntable you’ll have to buy a separate preamp to get everything sounding the way it should.
While it doesn’t have inputs for a full 5.1 setup, due to the nature of Bluesound equipment, it can be connected wirelessly to other devices, including another Powernode to connect the rear speakers wirelessly. We didn’t test this for review, although it’s built into the system, making it an easy upgrade if you ultimately want the full cinematic experience. System Power
The company has positioned the Bluesound Powernode as the center of your entertainment experience, and the new features and upgrades help with this. The device has moved away from 50 watts of power for external speakers in the last iterations and now delivers 80 watts. This allows for more variety in speakers, giving buyers the freedom to choose which sound suits their needs. They also reportedly used the same power stage as in the NAD C368 integrated amplifier, a much more expensive offering, making the Powernode a fantastic choice for value and performance.
The final Notable difference from the competition is the support for the MQA audio format, which delivers high-resolution music found on services like Tidal. While there are many streaming platforms, the ability to support this format gives Bluesound an edge in terms of quality, especially for those who demand only the best audio experience. Audio experience
This small audio box does not seem to be able to compete with the larger systems currently on the market. But looks can be deceiving, the Powernode can be earth-shattering in combination with the right speakers. For testing, we paired the system with a set of PSB Alpha Series P5 bookshelf speakers and it sounded very interesting.
I’m a fan of the Powernode’s audio – it’s clear, full of power, while never feeling colored or over-processed. Like many Class D amplifiers on the market today, the Powernode never overcomplicates the audio it delivers. Sound feels true to its source, without giving off too much heat. While many appreciate the specific EQ offered on many speakers, Bluesound has opted for a clear audio experience, and I love that. “When every aspect of the sound has a chance to shine, you can hear the finest details, while still enjoying the complexity and vibrancy of different audio sources.”
The Bluesound Powernode provides a clear window into the audio recording. By giving every aspect of the sound the chance to shine, you can hear the smallest details, while still enjoying the complexity and vibrancy of different audio sources. You will feel as if you are right in the middle of the recording studio, hearing everything there is to see, never feeling that one aspect dominates the other, provided the music or sound is mixed properly. While many amps in the sub-1000 range will mix the different sounds together, making them feel like a wall of noise, the Powernode manages to keep each piece of audio separate, while retaining the depth that makes music exciting and rewarding. . There are limitations to this soundscape, with the sound losing this complexity when you push the volume to its limits. While the audio should still sound good, depending on the speakers you pair with the Powernode, you’ll find that it can get muffled or muddy and the clarity lost. That said, in most residential environments you should never go near this loud sound to fill the room with crisp, clear audio.
I was a fan of the previous Powernode, and the minor improvements and refinements to the general formula make this iteration a worthy upgrade. The increase in power is a great perk, and with the ability to listen to high-resolution audio formats, it makes an already great product even more of a must-buy. If you love audio and demand only the best, Bluesound is still the boss when it comes to audio quality and wireless music.
