The Review on Bose QuietComfort Earbuds

The hunt for the perfect noise canceling earbuds seems endless. The Apple AirPods Pro are the obvious choice for iPhone owners, but Bose hopes you’ll also consider the Bose QuietComfort Earbuds. Whether you’re a die-hard Apple fan or a dedicated Android user, these earbuds are worth it. Bose believes its noise-cancelling earphones are nothing short of genius, and the price reflects that. Let’s see if you agree.

Who should get the Bose QuietComfort earbuds?

Commuters and globetrotters should get the QuietComfort earplugs because they feature excellent active noise cancellation (ANC). The buttons won’t completely mute your airplane cabin, but they can certainly calm your surroundings. Office workers and remote workers will also enjoy the ANC and be able to use the earplugs for conference calls. Anyone who doesn’t mind spending a little more for a household name will appreciate the comfort and durability of these earbuds.

What is it like to use the Bose QuietComfort Earbuds?

The Bose QuietComfort earbuds are attractive, yet bulky and available in black or white. The design is akin to the Bose Noise Canceling Headphones 700: discreet with subtle curves. Bose caught a lot of flak for its original true wireless earbuds, because they were ridiculously bulky. Although Bose has downsized its QC earbuds, they still stick out more from the ear than most alternatives.

A sturdy charging case houses the earphones and shares the same matte black exterior. You can easily clean the housing by wiping it with a cloth, which you should do a few times a week because it absorbs oil quickly. Four LEDs line the housing and indicate the remaining battery levels. In a button rest between the two earbuds, and you can press it to manually enter pairing mode.

When you open the case for the first time, the earbuds automatically enter pairing mode. For the best experience, download the Bose Music app. This is necessary to quickly switch between devices, reconfigure the controls and adjust ANC levels. You can set three quick favorite ANC/transparency mode levels and cycle through them by double tapping the left earbud.

How to control the Bose QuietComfort earbuds

Bose’s earplugs feature only touch controls, and because the sequence of taps and swipes isn’t always intuitive, we’ve created a table of the controls below.

What Bluetooth codecs are supported by Bose QuietComfort Earbuds?

Like the Bose Sport Earbuds, the QuietComfort Earbuds use Bluetooth 5.1 and work well within a range of nine meters. Whether you take the earbuds outdoors or listen from your home office, you don’t have to worry about lost connections.

Like all modern Bose wireless headsets, the QuietComfort Earbuds support two Bluetooth codecs: SBC and AAC. This is very good news for iPhone owners, as iOS can easily handle the high-quality AAC codec; Android, on the other hand, has issues with consistent streaming over AAC. If streaming quality inconsistencies become too frustrating, you can always force SBC off your Android phone’s developer settings.

What is the difference between Bluetooth 5.1 and Bluetooth 5.0?

Bluetooth 5.1 has a more accurate location features than Bluetooth 5.0, allowing your smartphone to easily understand the direction and precise location of your Bose earbuds. This is great for something like “find my earbuds”, but strangely, version 4.2.4 of the Bose Music app lacks this feature.

Bluetooth 5.1 is also slightly more power efficient than Bluetooth 5.0, thanks to a more advanced caching system. This translates into faster automatic connection times. Both Bluetooth 5.0 and 5.1 are part of the Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) standard. They are not part of LE Audio, which will initially receive support in Bluetooth Core Specification 5.1.

How long does the battery last?

We subjected the Bose QuietComfort earbuds to a constant output of 75 dB until the batteries ran out, and they lasted 5 hours and 29 minutes with active noise cancellation turned on. This is above average for ANC true wireless earbuds, beating the AirPods Pro and Sony WF-1000XM3.

You charge the earbuds quickly by putting them in the case for just 15 minutes, giving you two hours of play time. Fully charging the earbuds will take you two hours, while a full charge of the case takes three hours via USB-C. The case also supports Qi wireless charging, although speeds are limited by your particular mat.

How do the Bose QuietComfort Earbuds sound?

The Bose QuietComfort earbuds sound decent, but the frequency response probably won’t please audiophiles. Bass notes are boosted and sound twice as loud as low mids (where the fundamental frequencies of the human voice lie). This can cause vocals to sound a bit muffled during particularly bass-heavy accompaniments. Most consumers will enjoy the extra bass and higher mids as it adds a bit more oomph to music while preserving harmonic details.
