The Review on Echo Show 8 2nd-gen
We’ve been shouting the name “Alexa” for so many years that it’s easy to forget that Amazon’s range of Echo smart speakers and displays have only been in our living rooms since 2014. The company has launched so many different flavors of Echo that we’ve honestly lost count.
And just three months after the launch of the beautiful third-generation Echo show 10, which featured a sleek motorized swivel base, the tech juggernaut has welcomed two more new Echo Show smart displays to the family.
The new second-generation Echo show 8 smart display is here, and the middle kid is going to give the more expensive Echo show 10 a serious run for its money.
The smart device camera got a major upgrade, plus the processor is better and it’s packed with new ones features Startup.
Before we get to the nitty-gritty, if you’re not too excited about your home, have a look at our round-up of the best smart speakers available right now? In the guide, you’ll find reviews of other smart displays, such as Google’s 7-inch Nest hub.
While we haven’t had a chance to look at the lower spec Echo show 5 yet, read on for our thoughts on the show 8.
You can rely on our independent reviews. We may get commission from some retailers, but we never let this affect selections, which are shaped by real-world testing and expert advice. These revenues help fund journalism in The Independent. Amazon Echo show 8, 2nd generation

Design, display and specifications
For those of you who already own an Echo show 8, you’ll struggle to notice any difference when it comes to the design of the second-generation version. It basically looks the same. It has the same fabricated back, the same “charcoal” or “glacier white” options, and weighs and measures the same, with an 8-inch display.
But look up to the right and you’ll notice that instead of a grainy 1-megapixel camera in a round component, the second-generation model has a much-improved 13-megapixel camera. It still has the privacy shutter that slides into place over the lens, giving you peace of mind if you’re afraid of prying eyes, and there’s some physical cushioning too button if you don’t want the Echo to hear you too. We recommend to use the camera on when you go out – more on that below.
As for that screen, it’s a bit spicier than the previous show 8 thanks to the MediaTek MT8183 octa-core processor, but not in a hugely noticeable way. The second-generation device also has an adaptive ambient display, which adjusts to the light in your room (think TrueTone on Apple devices or the ambient sensing display on the Google Nest Hub). However, we preferred to use the device only with our voice rather than the touchscreen.
It has the same four-microphone configuration as the previous model, and overall it has chosen up our vote when we asked. We had to raise our voices slightly above normal, something we don’t really need to do with our Amazon Echo 3 smart speaker, which includes more microphones.
Annoyingly, Amazon didn’t design the Echo Show 8 with a built-in kickstand, so we couldn’t tilt it up to us. It was a bit tedious to dive down a bit and try videos in the kitchen. Amazon does sell an adjustable kickstand (£22.99, Amazon.co.uk) if it can’t tilt up is just as important to you as it is to us.
The features in the camera are probably what we’re most excited about when it comes to the Echo show 8. As mentioned before, there’s a superior 13-megapixel camera, which made our mom coo at how plain we looked when we stopped by her own older Echo show in another part of the country. And now you can easily join Zoom calls from within the Echo too.
While it doesn’t spin like the show 10, the second-generation show 8 has a pretty nifty new one feature that follows you as you move. The camera followed us from left to right, no problem, as we walked up and across the living room, waving our arms up and down as we went. The feature worked a charm and kept us in the center of the frame wherever we went.
We also enjoyed the new home-monitoring feature, which allows you to see a live feed of your home when you are not there.
Unfortunately, two of the most attractive of the device features are not available in the UK – Alexa Guard can notify US users if your Echo hears the sound of breaking glass, and the device also has the ability to run routines when Echo show owners walk into the room, such as turning it on of a smart lights. Sound
There’s a dual 2-inch speaker system that makes the songs in our upbeat, poppy Spotify playlists sound nice and full, but the soundstage isn’t the widest. As with previous Echo show devices, we found that it sounded better with the screen facing away from us – we think this is just because of the product’s slanted shape. But for a £130 device, the speakers do a great job.
