The Review on HTC Vive Focus 3

The business HTC Vive Focus 3 sets a new benchmark for all-in-one VR, with a smart design and some mouthwatering specs. However, the strange performance dip reminds us that balancing performance and accessibility is no easy task. In front of

Expensive performance blips Noisy

The Vive Focus 3 is the latest all-in-one virtual reality (VR) headset from HTC, the successor to the Vive Focus Plus, and it’s a sight to behold.

It has a spec sheet that rivals the previous generation of PC headsets, with a combined 5K resolution across dual displays, a 90Hz refresh rate, and a 120-degree field of view (FOV). And yet, like its predecessor, the Vive Focus 3 is completely wireless, with all the tracking and computing on board.

The screen is remarkably bright and the performance smooth, but a few dips here and there. And HTC has managed to eliminate some of the nausea-inducing visual quirks that plagued all-in-one headsets in the past.

While inside-out tracking is inferior to lighthouse-based systems (for example, you can’t perform actions with the controller behind your back), it’s a price we gladly paid for greater portability, easy setup, and unparalleled ease of use.

The Vive Focus 3 headset is also pleasing to the eye, and its lightweight chassis and carefully balanced design make it comfortable to wear for long periods of time. The magnetic face pack and padding are also a nice touch, making them easy to replace and clean.

Keep in mind that it may take a few tries to get the fit just right, especially if you wear glasses. Unless the headset is positioned exactly that way and with the correct inter-pupillary distance (IPD), you’ll encounter an annoying blur.

At first glance, this may seem like a rival to the Quest 2, Oculus’ standalone headset, but the two operate in completely different arenas. The Quest is a launch pad for anyone who wants to dive into virtual reality, but HTC’s new headset is aimed entirely at the business market. So if you’re looking for a gaming headset, look elsewhere. The Vive Focus 3 isn’t cheap, but that’s not entirely unexpected considering this is a business VR headset.

Battery life also stands in the way of a marathon session; we found that the Focus 3 was dry after a few hours of use. However, the ease with which a new one can be exchanged allows for a quick switch between meetings in the meantime. If only the headset came with multiple batteries included!

The Focus 3 comes with a few new infrared controllers, which do away with the trackpad in favor of a traditional joystick and buttons. The joystick in particular is a welcome addition and offers a more familiar alternative to teleportation as a means of moving through the virtual world.

The controllers are lightweight and comfortable to hold, and the different and buttons and triggers are palpable and satisfying. The arrangement of the buttons and joystick make everything easy to reach, unlike the side button for example on the Vive Pro controllers.
