The Review on Huawei MatePad Pro 12.6
Huawei MatePad Pro 12.6 About €800 Review Pros
Premium guild quality Really good, sharp display Top performance Best audio output on the market Thin profile and bezels Excellent battery life
No Google apps 60Hz screen refresh rate
Huawei provided us with a review unit of the MatePad Pro 12.6, but in our opinion they had no say and have not seen this review for you. We have been using the device for a few weeks before forming an opinion.
The Huawei MatePad Pro 12.6 is the company’s latest tablet. This is a larger variant of the MatePad Pro 10.8 that came out last year features a 12.6-inch screen. The two devices actually have a lot in common, and I’ll mention the 10.8 model in this review, as I reviewed it last year. In any case, the first thing that strikes you, before we get started, is that the MatePad Pro 12.6 comes without Google services. Due to the US ban, Huawei had to adapt and exclude Google services from its devices. We’ll talk more about the software later.
This is one of the first Huawei devices to come with Harmony OS out of the box. The Huawei MatePad Pro 12.6 is a very slim device and it is great for productivity. Good tablets are rare these days. When it comes to Android tablets, Samsung stands out and doesn’t have much competition. Well, if you’re wondering if this one is worth buying too, and can it sit right next to Samsung… read on. The Huawei MatePad Pro 12.6 offers a first-class design without a doubt

When it comes to design, the Huawei MatePad Pro 12.6 is quite similar to its smaller sibling. A big difference is visible at the back camera island, but that’s about it. Apart from the size difference, it can be difficult to tell the difference between these two devices. That’s not bad at all, because Huawei hit the raakte home ran with the MatePad Pro last year. This device looks very sleek and premium. The frame is made of metal while we are not sure about the back. It doesn’t look like metal. It could be nicely processed plastic or something like that, but it feels more premium. The bezels are very thin, just like the device itself
The bezels are very thin on the tablet, but not too thin, as you need something to grip this thing. Huawei left just enough thickness for that. All bezels are the same thickness, which ensures a nice uniform design. There are four speakers on this tablet, two on the left and two on the right (landscape orientation). We will talk more about it in the audio section, and also about the lack of the audio jack. This tablet also does not have a fingerprint scanner, but a regular power/lock key. It’s a big tablet, keep that in mind
Keep in mind that this is quite a large device. The display is 12.6 inches and as thin as the bezels are, it’s big. Plus, it’s quite heavy. The Huawei MatePad Pro 12.6 weighs 609 grams and is therefore considerably heavier than its sibling. However, that’s a trade-off for such a large screen. However, the tablet is quite thin, which is appreciated. Keep that in mind before making a purchase decision, as the 10.8-inch model is much easier to use. Holding this thing with one hand is not something you want to do for long periods of time. The Huawei Smart Magnetic Keyboard (2021) is the best accessory for this tablet
AH Huawei Smart Magnetic Keyboard 2021 image 15
Huawei sent the Smart Magnetic Keyboard my way to see it next to this tablet. Please note, however, that this product is sold separately. If you have the money and want a keyboard for the MatePad Pro 12.6, this is the keyboard to get. It acts as a cover for the tablet at the same time, which is great. The tablet magnetizes to the keyboard and the magnet is strong enough. This is without a doubt the number one accessory you should buy for this tablet. I enjoyed using it and even typing it up part of this review about it. The keys are good, although the travel isn’t great. That’s perfectly acceptable considering this accessory is extremely thin, I’m actually surprised I got as much travel as I did. I never felt annoyed while typing on this keyboard. I do like chiclet keys though, so…yeah. This keyboard is definitely not for those of you who like mechanical keyboards. Pairing is very easy up, and it also acts as a stand for the device. It is a perfect accessory for the MatePad Pro 12.6. The Huawei Pencil (2021) is the accessory to get if you want a stylus
The Huawei Pencil is also sold separately, so keep that in mind. Now it is a very handy stylus to have for this tablet. It does offer some extra functionality and precision that some of you might need, especially if you’re a designer. There are also some great gestures you can use with it. This stylus feels great in the hand and it magnetizes to the side of the tablet. So you can carry it with you and charge it at the same time. You also get different tips in the box, if you buy the Huawei Pencil (2021). This stylus offers 9ms latency, which is excellent. It also supports up up to 4,096 pressure-sensitive levels. This tablet comes with an included app that allows you to take advantage of everything this stylus has to offer. The screen is excellent, but it lacks support for a high refresh rate

The Huawei MatePad Pro 12.6 has a beautiful screen. This is an improvement over its smaller sibling as the 10.8 variant didn’t offer an OLED display. The MatePad Pro 12.6 features a WQXGA (2560 x 1600) OLED panel, which counts up to 240 PPI. This tablet supports HDR10+ output, but keep in mind that many apps won’t offer it due to the US ban. That said, the device has a 90 percent screen-to-body ratio. It has managed to achieve that thanks to such thin bezels all around.
The screen on the MatePad Pro 12.6 is naturally flat and it is really beautiful. It offers punchy colors and those deep blacks you’re used to on OLED screens. The screen is sufficiently sharp. It’s not as sharp as with Samsung’s most premium offering, but you don’t notice that. This screen is more than sharp enough and there’s no chance you’ll notice pixelation or anything like that. You are limited to a refresh rate of 60 Hz
A major drawback of this screen, in my opinion, is the lack of a refresh rate of 120 Hz. This screen doesn’t offer any high refresh rate, it’s actually stuck at 60Hz. Don’t get me wrong, it works great, and that’s not something a lot of people will notice or complain about, but once you’ve used 120Hz displays it’s hard to go back, especially with such large panels. You will definitely notice the difference when scrolling, gaming and many other things. But only if you’re used to screens with a high refresh rate. Huawei has done a really great job with animations here, and the tablet runs extremely smoothly even on a 60Hz screen. The lack of a high refresh rate is pretty much the only downside to this display, as it also gets very bright even when you’re outside. The performance is great, in every way
The performance of the Huawei MatePad Pro 12.6 is excellent to say the least. That’s not surprising given the powerful internals. This thing is powered by the Kirin 9000 5G SoC while it has 8GB of RAM inside along with 256GB of internal storage. Huawei’s all-new operating system, HarmonyOS, is also really well optimized, so it works well with these components. During our use, we did not notice any lag or anything like that. There’s no way we’ve managed to slow this device down. Even if you use some of his multitasking features, like running floating windows on top of whatever you do, nothing has hindered its performance. The same goes for split screen mode. Gaming is a breeze, as it should be on a premium tablet
We tried to game on this thing, of course, and it handled that aspect like a champ. The fact that it has a 60Hz display only helps, of course, as it isn’t that demanding on the hardware components. We performed Angry Birds 2, Lords Mobile, Asphalt 9 and several other games. Everything ran perfectly on this tablet. Regular, everyday tasks also worked very well. This tablet is a multimedia machine, with excellent sound, which we will talk about later. Browsing, multitasking… it all works great and it looks great on that big, beautiful screen. Now, however, Google services and apps aren’t here, and that might be a big minus for some of you, so let’s talk about that. There are no Google services and apps, but this tablet may surprise you in the software department
