The Review on KRK KNS 6400 Studio Headphones
Jands | Expect to pay: $149
The good folks at KRK Systems have been working hard since 1986 to become a household name in affordable, professional-quality monitor speakers. The ubiquitous yellow speaker cones of their legendary Rokit range are synonymous with glorious sound reproduction around the world, a beacon of reliability for bedroom and studio producers alike; and now they’ve taken a confident step into the dynamic headphone market with the release of the KNS-6400.
One of the big selling points here, aside from its ultra-competitive retail price, is the KNS-6400’s compatibility with the aforementioned Rokits. Designed to have the same peripheral frequency response and unique voicing (10 Hz to 22 kHz) as the world’s best-selling monitors, these headphones serve as a sonic analog, portable alternative to a Rokit setup, perfect for any traveling producer who doesn’t have a beat when away from their beloved studio setup. This kind of thinking is relatively new given the leaps and bounds that home recording has taken the past few years, but as far as workflows go, it’s an extremely beneficial one.

By streamlining your headphone and speaker setups, you have the luxury of optimal efficiency at the listening position, whether you’re in front of the monitors in the studio or on the road, working in the airport departure lounge (if and when that ever happens again). No more wasted hours revising and remixing tracks to account for listening differences between different setups. This is clearly a big draw for anyone looking to save time and maximize productivity (who doesn’t??). The tasteful black/yellow aesthetic that is consistent across the entire KRK product range doesn’t hurt the eyes either.
The closed ear cups and the cosy, high-quality acoustic foam cushioning provide excellent sound insulation (up up to 26 dBA ambient) while avoiding bulky or overweight. While not completely noise-canceling, they provide more than enough isolation and volume for live sound purposes and are great for live mixing and DJing. The 40mm neodymium drivers are right where you’d want them, sized for monitor headphones, offering a workable soundstage and fairly quick recoil for detailed playback.
These are really comfortable headphones too, with well-constructed adjustable headbands and swivel cups that can be adjusted to fit all kinds of skulls. An impact-resistant plastic coating and soft travel bag add extra durability points if you ever need to stash them away on a commute, as does the detachable 2.5m cable designed to come loose when pulled (which inevitably happens often) !).
It’s worth mentioning here that KRK Systems’ monitor range is known for its slightly improved low-end: not blatant enough to give a truly deceiving mix, but enough to avoid sounding completely flat and sterile. like many of their competitors. This approach carries over to the KNS-6400. Is it a completely fair frequency response? Hard to say. But there’s a lot to be said for adding a touch of bass warmth to the listening experience, and it’s also worth recognizing that the world isn’t flat: most home and club systems will likely have enhanced bass frequencies in line with these headphones anyway.
Having headphones that are really pleasant to the ear certainly doesn’t refer to heresy, but purists should note that these aren’t the absolute flattest sounding headphones on the market, which they are is a great way to get you started with KRK. equipped studio to mate. meanders in a great on-the-fly workflow.
A handy side effect of this streamlined 360 approach to monitoring (especially for those working solo between a dedicated control room and a live room) is that the KNS6400 is a great way to place microphones in the room, with the consistent voice found between the KNS6400 and its sister loudspeakers and the relatively good isolation ensure consistency between the two different monitoring environments. I found this particularly useful, especially when using something like Avid Control for Pro Tools or other forms of control protocols from the live room.
Another useful side effect of this workflow comes in the form of ear training. By using the KNS6400 as everyday headphones, you are constantly listening to reference sound through this perceived lens, inadvertently training your ear for this particular sonic voice, which is sure to pay off in your further mixing activities – even as a controlled variable.
All in all, these are excellent headphones at a very nice price, with the added appeal of integrating seamlessly with an industry standard monitor brand. We wouldn’t be surprised if these quickly become a dominant feature on the audio production and DJ landscape, which only adds to the esteemed heritage of KRK Systems products.
