The Review on Mobvoi TicWatch E3
For fans of Google’s wearable platform, Wear OS, we’re in a bit of uncertainty right now – which is why putting together a TicWatch E3 review has me a bit confused. While we know that Google and Samsung are working together to rebuild Wear OS, we don’t know if existing Wear OS watches will get the update.
Fossil has said it has no plans to upgrade current watches, and there has been some confusion over whether any of the best Android smartwatches available will be upgraded or not – see what I mean? It’s a pickle. Traditionally, Mobvoi’s line of E-devices has been entry-level smartwatches due to its barebones design and the hardware used to push the price.
Interestingly, though, the TicWatch E3, while still offering a very understated design, is one of two smartwatches on the market with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 4100 processor – the other being the TicWatch Pro 3. So with the top of the line processor, higher than usual price tag for an E-device and the precarious upgradeability of the smartwatch platform, is this worth your money?
Bottom line: As only the second smartwatch to be released with the Snapdragon 4100 processor, the TicWatch E3 is a rarity. Combine that with good battery life and beneficial health and fitness features and you get a Wear OS watch worth considering. However, you can pause your purchase until you know if E3 will be updated to the new Wear OS promised at Google I/O. The good
Using the Snapdragon 4100 processor Great performance Lightweight Built-in sleep tracking
Huge bezel around the screen The charging connection is in a bad place Unsure of future software support Price is on the high side
TicWatch E3: Price and Availability
The TicWatch E3 was launched on June 16, 2021. You’ll find only one color option for the watch case, Panther Black, but there will be three color options for the silicone strap: black, neon yellow and ash blue. The TicWatch E3 has a launch price of $199.99 and can be found on both Amazon and Mobvoi’s websites.
TicWatch E3: What’s Good
I was introduced to Mobvoi and its line of TicWatch’s with the original E when I supported it on Kickstarter in 2017. That smartwatch caught my eye because of its sleek design and low cost — and it was from a brand I’d never heard of. Four years later, Mobvoi’s line of TicWatch’s has grown not only as a product line, but in popularity as well. By turning some of the best Android smartwatches into the best cheap Android smartwatches like the TicWatch E, the company wants to keep that momentum going with E3. As I mentioned earlier, the line of TicWatch E devices has long had a very simplistic design language, and the E3 continues that trend. However, the TicWatch E3 gets a bit more sophistication in the visual department in the third iteration. While the E3 is still made of plastic, instead of the dull black plastic used in previous versions, it is a nice textured dark metallic gray color. The back of the watch is basic black, but has a nice pattern around the edges.

You will find two pushers buttons on the right side of the watch, straddling a hole for the microphone. The top pusher button is used as the home button, access the app drawer and your Google Assistant with a long press.
The second pusher button is programmable to launch a few different apps, but it is set to open TicExcercise initially. You can also access a quick menu for restarting or shutting down the watch, entering essential mode or clearing the speaker by long pressing the bottom button. Long press the button is also a quick way to reach the customization menu for the one-touch action.
On the underside of the gray housing, opposite the buttons, is the opening for the speaker. It’s great that Mobvoi included a speaker, not just for music or phone calls, but mostly for using Google Assistant. Since this has the necessary 1GB of RAM and runs the Snapdragon 4100, Google Assistant is actually a thing on the TicWatch E3, just like it is on the TicWatch Pro 3.
On the back of the watch you will find the heart speed and blood oxygen sensors. These also act as a detection method on the wrist for security. This is especially important if you want to use the watch for: mobile payments. Because the TicWatch E3 has NFC built-in, you can use the smartwatch for Google Pay when you’re on the go.
