The Review on Motorola Defy rugged smartphone

The Defy is not your everyday rugged smartphone. Motorola and Bullit team up up to deliver mobile that should appeal to a wide audience outside the traditional consumer market. Make sure you are aware of its limitations. In front of

Great design and form factor Two-year warranty Support for Android Enterprise Lanyard works well

Against

Poor performance Average value for money No USB port coverage

It’s been over a decade since Motorola launched the Defy, a device that was one of the first rugged smartphones to hit the market. The product line lasted a little over a year before Motorola Mobility, which was about to be bought by Google, named it a day after the launch of the Defy+ and Defy Mini.

Fast forward to 2021 and Motorola – now owned by Lenovo – has teamed up with rugged smartphone and brand revivalist specialist Bullitt Group to relaunch the Defy as a way to tap into the seemingly growing market of independent gig operators ( think Deliveroo and Uber Eats bikers). Prices and availability

The Motorola Defy will be available in select European and Latin American markets in the coming weeks from €329 / Β£279 (about $390), although prices may vary by country. No date has been given for the launch of the device in other territories.

Design

The Defy is unlike any rugged smartphone we’ve been using lately: it’s taller than most, not as wide as we’d expect, and surprisingly thin. At 170 x 78 x 11 mm and weighing 234 g, it is lighter than all recently tested IP68 smartphones, while offering MIL SPEC 810H as well as being drop-resistant and waterproof.

Back of device

Aesthetically, it is one of the rare outdoor smartphones that comes close to the design of a normal consumer device. You would think – from a distance – that it is a phone Featuring a protective TPU abrasion resistant outer shell with a textured rubber finish.

Front side Camera Notch

The tear-hole that hides the 8-megapixel selfie sensor sits atop a large 6.5-inch HD+ display with a 20:9 aspect ratio. The latter is covered with a Corning Gorilla Glass Victus layer 0.7mm thick and 0.5mm recessed; great for avoiding unwanted scratches.

Volume and power Buttons

The SIM card tray is located on the left side of the phone while the volume knob, power and custom (push to talk) buttons are located on the right. On top is a 3.5mm headphone jack, a rarity to phones launched in 2021.

USB-C port

The bottom hides a downward-firing speaker and a Type-C USB port, with no protective flap, not a good idea in our opinion. At the back you will find three camera sensors (48 megapixel, 2 megapixel depth and 2 megapixel macro), a flash LED and a fingerprint sensor decorated with the Motorola logo.

lanyard

Note that there is a slot for a lanyard at the bottom left of the smartphone, a well thought out addition. Motorola has not confirmed whether there will be other accessories that may be useful to digital nomads, merchants or site/field workers. Advertisement
