The Review on Razer Seiren X

There are better options for music production but as a cheap way for gamers, streamers and vloggers to level up up of headset microphones, the Seiren X is a winner. Pros

Beautiful design Great value Made with streamers in mind

A single shooting pattern slightly reduces versatility

The Razer Seiren X is the entry point for gaming peripherals into the low-cost USB microphone market. Being from that world, the Seiren is heavily marketed to gamers, streamers, and vloggers looking for a quick and easy way to upgrade their sound. Many gamers – and I speak as one myself – have used headsets that combine headphones with a small stork microphone on the front. These are fine, but as technology has improved – and prices have subsequently fallen – having a dedicated microphone is no longer the preserve of the professional setup.

Upgrading to a dedicated external microphone has a number of benefits, not least in the immediate improvement in sound quality that you can enjoy. Your voice will be clearer, ambient noise (ie chair movements) will be reduced and that signature mouth-breathing sound that plagues headset microphones will be infinitely more controllable. You all know what I mean. All this adds up to a higher level of presentation for your listeners or viewers and a better user experience for you.

What we have is a small, nicely designed USB condenser microphone that works with just about any device with a USB input. It does have a specific feature making it ideal for the lone gamer/streamer on music applications, for example – more on that later – but as a cheap general purpose microphone it’s not bad at all. Let’s take a closer look at what the Razer Seiren is, and the situations in which it will come into its own.

With the Razer Seiren X very much at the entry level of the price spectrum, you’d be forgiven for thinking the quality isn’t the best. We certainly weren’t expecting great things, so we were pleasantly surprised with what we found. The housing is not all metal, as you will see with higher microphones up the scale, although this isn’t so much of an issue when you consider that the Seiren X is likely to be on a desktop alone. It is not a microphone that you take with you to make field recordings, for example, but it is perfectly suited to the environment in which it is likely to be. Even without a rigid metal housing it is still a very well designed microphone. Everything from the unboxing to the ball-jointed kickstand gives the impression of a well-made, nicely thought-out piece of equipment.

Being a gaming mic, we expected all sorts of customizable RGB elements, but Razer opted to keep things a little more subtle, with a green-lit mute button on the front of the microphone as much as there is in the way of color. Other than that, it’s a smooth matte black finish, although white and pink versions are available if they suit your aesthetic more. Also try

the most important feature that the Seiren X offers is the pick-up pattern. This determines where the microphone will ‘accept’ incoming audio and ensures that sound from elsewhere is rejected. With the Seiren X there is a supercardioid pattern, which means that the microphone only picks up sound from a specific axis, i.e. directly in front of it. This is ideal for desktop speech applications where the microphone has excellent choice up the voice while rejecting sounds coming from outside that area. While this is great for static desktop locations, it hinders the suitability for music. For example, it is not a microphone that you would place in the middle of a room to record a band rehearsal. But then it claims not to be.

With so many USB condenser microphones available, including models from brands like Shure and Rode, Razer would always be in a battle to be heard. However, with the Seiren X, it has found its niche and built it up a lot of goodwill over the years for the quality of its gaming peripherals. For music production, we would honestly look elsewhere. The Shure MV7 or Audio Technica AT2020USB+ will deliver superior results in those situations, but if you’re looking for a way to amplify your voice and not be overly concerned about music, the Razer Seiren X is a solid choice and stands out. for great value for money.
