Gaming monitors with a 21:9 aspect ratio, also known as ultrawide monitors, have proven their relevance and usefulness in the game genre. A wide variety of sizes and bend radii are available from 34-38 inches diagonally and bends from 1800R to 3800R. But the more extreme specifications can be found in the megawide category, where you will find 32:9 49-inch. These screens are laser-focused for gaming and their extreme size and curvature are better suited for entertainment.

We looked at two other high-resolution 32:9 displays — the AOC Agon AG493UCX and Viotek SUW49DA — both with a very small 1800R turn radius. But here comes Samsung with its latest Odyssey G9, the LC49G95T. The Samsung 49-inch Odyssey G9 has the most extreme curve we’ve seen yet, 1000R, and is one of the best gaming monitors we’ve tested. With a comfortable viewing distance of 2-3 feet, it completely fills your peripheral vision. But that’s not all, it’s also a very nice monitor.

Samsung starts with a VA panel in mega-wide QHD resolution, 5120 x 1440. That’s the equivalent of two 27-inch 1440p monitors side by side for a 32:9 aspect ratio. It also means an ideal pixel density of 109 ppi, which is a sweet spot on the performance/price spectrum. While it requires slightly more graphics horsepower than a 2560 x 1440 monitor, it’s not as demanding as a 16:9 4K display, which has a million more pixels to move.

It also means faster speeds. The other two 49-inchers we tested score at 120Hz, but the Odyssey G9 manages 240Hz, making it one of the fastest large monitors we’ve seen yet. Samsung has also put its reputation for image quality into this monitor with expanded colours, DisplayHDR 1000 and a factory calibration. While it has an edge array backlight instead of the more premium full array local dimming (FALD), it selectively dims to increase contrast for both SDR and HDR content. Our HDR tests below reveal one of the widest dynamic ranges we’ve captured to date.

Gaming and entertainment features are here too. The 49-inch Odyssey G9’s video processing is also covered by FreeSync and G-Sync compatibility certification from AMD and Nvidia, respectively. Both technologies operate at 240 Hz with HDR and the panel has a native 10-bit color depth for smooth image transitions.

The Odyssey G9 is well equipped to anchor a high-end gaming system. It’s premium priced, but on paper it has unique features that you won’t find anywhere else right now. We should note that Samsung sells this monitor under two model numbers. The business version is called LC49G97T and has a suggested retail price that is $220 cheaper than our review focus at the time of writing; however, we’ve seen our focus on reviews sell for less. You should choose the cheapest available as Samsung has confirmed to us that the monitors are the same. Mounting & Accessories

A long box reveals the Odyssey G9 in three parts. Once you’ve attached the large yet slim base to its sturdy upright, it bolts to the panel with four fasteners held in the holder. No need to fish around for the small hardware bag, but you will need a Phillips screwdriver to complete the assembly.

A plastic trim ring snaps into place on the pivot of the panel to create the RGB lighting effect at the mounting point on the back of the monitor. Included cables include DisplayPort and USB. The power supply is internal and the supplied IEC cord has handy angled plugs.

Any conversation about the G9’s physical features should include: words such as ‘large’ and ‘wide’. However, the front panel is very thin at just 10mm on the top and sides and 17mm on the bottom. There you will find a small Samsung logo and the G-Sync certification sticker. If you look very closely, you will see a microscopic, blue power LED. It certainly won’t distract you. The control joystick is the only way to switch power and navigate the OSD. At this price, a portable remote would be nice.

Obviously there is no attempt at slimness here. You won’t see the side view anywhere else. The back panel is a solid white piece with a few style lines cast in. A thin opening cuts across the top with a large black circle at the attachment point. This is actually smoked and transparent when the customizable light effect on the back of the stand is turned on. You can specify colors and effects for RGB in the monitor’s on-screen display (OSD).

well tucked away up and under the panel are the inputs. Once you’ve made connections, a cover snaps into place to clean up up the wiring. Inputs are a single HDMI 2.0 and two DisplayPort 1.4s. You also get USB 3.0 (a up and two downstream) and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Despite the price, there are no built-in speakers. OSD Features

The 49-inch Odyssey G9’s OSD shares the same control panel as other Odyssey G-series screens with status rounds at the top of all menus showing refresh rate, Adaptive-Sync and more, and is divided into six submenus.

Game is where the important stuff is. That includes the refresh rate, which should be set to 240 if you want 240 Hz, Black Equalizer, which increases shadow detail visibility, response time (overdrive), and the Adaptive-Sync switch. Interestingly, overdrive is grayed out when Adaptive-Sync is enabled, but our testing indicated it worked as we didn’t see any blur or ghosting artifacts behind moving objects.

The Game section also has options for low input lag (which is automatically enabled in most picture modes), aspect ratio and target points, a series of crosshairs in red or green.
