The Review on superior BT, ANC, TWS earphones Jabra Elite 85t

If you want top shelf BT, ANC, earphones then Jabra Elite 85t and its replaced Elite 75t should be on your shopping list.

Jabra joins Sennheiser in eschewing the closed earphone design of most ANC ‘pods’ and their resulting narrow soundstage. Jabra Elite 85t uses a semi-open design with a wider podium. For me, I will take sound quality over ‘under pressure’ ANC any day.

I also mentioned last year’s flagship, the Jabra Elite 75t (review here 9.2/10). It received a firmware update in September 2020 that added the Qualcomm TWS/ANC . unlocked featuresmaking them worthy competitors to the Jabra Elite 85t. As a bonus, we’ll test and script the Jabra 75t with its new firmware and give you a fair comparison. Jabra Elite 85t and Elite 75t

Let’s start with the basic specs

Jabra miniaturization of design and fit – not as deep in the ear as 75t Oval silicone ear gels (was round) Dedicated ANC chip – Fully adjustable digital between full ANC, full transparency with HearThrough mode and everywhere in between – 11 levels! Six microphones (4 for ANC) and wind shield for clear conversations 12mm transducers (was 6m) IPX4 (was IP55) Google, Siri and Alexa Semi-open design that limits the isolating ‘earplug effect’ (was closed)
Up up to 5.5 hours of battery with up up to 25 hours in the compact charging case (ANC on) USB-C and Qi certified for wireless charging Jabra Sound+ App Gold/Beige, Copper/Black, Titanium/Black, Black and Gray

Comfort – so huge

I’ve been wearing these a lot over the past month and they are a joy – no undue pressure on the ear canal. At no point did I feel like they were going to fall out.

Because ANC relies on effective noise isolation, we give the standard warning – make sure you use the correct size silicone eargel tips – small, medium or large to help block out noise. ANC – 11 levels

It has 11-stage adjustment, each providing an additional 3dB attenuation. From what I’ve read, it’s about three levels higher than Bose’s customizations.

By default, the ANC focuses on higher frequency sounds, such as passenger voices. The semi-open design tends to transmit lower, bass-heavy sound, like an airplane taking off. Since we can’t fly (easily), I tried this one out on several train journeys and after adjusting the ANC level, it effectively blocked the noise down to Bose levels.

You can also customize for HearThrough and everything in between. Hands-free – crisp and clear

It has six microphones (three on each button) and does a great job at reducing ambient noise (like wind) and two beamforms for your voice. Callers commented on the clarity even though I was in a very noisy train station.

Sidetone (hearing your voice through the earphones) is probably the best I’ve used. Battery – minimum 4 hours per charge

The housing is Qi wireless and USB-C. As a Qi user, I wouldn’t buy just any cable charging case.

abra claims 5.5 hours with ANC, and again these are lab numbers. Over the month we were on average between 4 and 4.5 hours at 75%. If you don’t use an ANC, you can add a few more hours.

Charging can be done from any USB-A 5V/1A/5W charger or, like the USB-C, any PD charger (although it won’t charge quickly).

Charging time varies from just over three hours (USB-C) to about 4 hours (Qi 5W)

You can use an hour of 15 minutes of charging. BT

It uses BT 5.1, so two 5.1 host devices can be connected to it. Codecs are SBS and AAC. We couldn’t control them with Qualcomm’s aptX, which is strange because it uses Qualcomm TWS chips. In any case, the sound quality of BT is proportional to the capabilities of the earphones. Voice assistant

Google Assistant, Alexa and Siri. To build
