The Review on Turtle Beach Recon 500 headset
Turtle Beach is a big name in console and PC gaming audio. The company’s products often serve as many gamers’ first headsets, and it has partnerships with Dr. Disrespect, Ali-A and other prominent names in the industry. With a long and respectable heritage, Turtle Beach is often a go-to for many gamers looking for their first gaming headset. The brand’s latest headset, the Recon 500, seems to combine big sound with gamer-friendly value.
The Turtle Beach Recon 500 delivers great multi-platform sound at a reasonable price, but lacks solid build quality.
There is nothing to write at a glance home on the design of the Recon 500. Users who use the all-black colorway will get exactly what they are looking for, while the Arctic Camo version offers a slightly nicer aesthetic. The black plastic is bordering on gray, but that’s normal when it comes to the most reasonably priced gaming headsets.
Turtle Beach avoids flashy branding by subtly placing the logo on the right earcup and the name on the left. It’s refreshing to see so many companies taking a more conservative approach to their designs. The most intense aspect of the headset’s branding is Turtle Beach printed on the top of the headband, which most people won’t notice.
Another understated element of the Recon 500 are the controls on the left earcup. The Recon 500 has a mute control, volume knob and detachable microphone jack. There’s nothing fancy about these controls, but they fit the design nicely and don’t have any extra flair.
An unobtrusive design allows the Recon 500 to fit into any setup, but you might want to think twice about how and where to take this headset. oh damn
Turtle Beach equips the Recon 500 with a plastic and metal reinforced headband, which is where the only problem lies with this headset. When testing the headband durability, the Recon 500 had plenty of flexibility when rotating the left earcup forward, but the same can’t be said for the right earcup as it broke quite easily.
Admittedly, there’s little reason to rotate your headset. But this has never happened in a durability test with any other headset or headphones reviewed by Dot Esports. It’s hard to see this happening in everyday use, but it’s worth keeping in mind if you’re someone who often travels with their headphones or headset.
Our reviewer reached out to a Turtle Beach representative, and the company claims this is the first time they’ve heard of a sustainability issue.
The real concern is that there doesn’t seem to be any metal reinforcing the headband, as the marketing states on the official website. The marketing could be talking about the metal headband sliders that make up a very small part of the headband when retracted, but even then the marketing is at least a little fuzzy.
It would be unfair to single out Turtle Beach as there are likely other companies using similar marketing in different ways. It’s just that Turtle Beach’s product highlights this and is a good reminder that marketing is always marketing up for interpretation.
