The Review on Turtle Beach Recon 500

Fast verdict: The Turtle Beach Recon 500 headphones don’t look fancy, but for the most part they offer the gaming basics you want at a decent price. Pros

Very comfortable fit Various color choices Removable microphone

cons

Small volume knob Some audio is leaking into the microphone

Turtle Beach Recon 500 Finder Score: 3.5

Turtle Beach’s new Recon 500 headphones come in either a plain or a nice camouflage finish, but otherwise they are fairly normal decent quality gaming headphones that are best suited for console gamers who plug into a controller. They are a comfortable, no-frills option – and that’s it. Design: Soft ear cushions work well for glasses

The Turtle Beach Recon 500 headphones tick just about every basic box you’d expect from a set of gaming headphones, but not much more than that. That’s usually appropriate given their price.

They are available in a plain black finish or the slightly fancier Arctic Camo finish as tested. I won’t say the Arctic Camo was to my personal taste. I mean, it’s a little cold as I write this, but the real risk of a polar bear attack feels low. Still, it’s nice to have a little choice.

The Turtle Beach Recon 500’s construction is resolutely plastic, apart from the metal frame that runs under the headband. They are fairly flexible with a simple padded top for comfort during longer gaming sessions.

That softer approach extends to the ear cups, which use a padded memory foam head that Turtle Beach specifically cites as more suited to gamers who wear glasses. I fit right into that category, and I’m certainly all too painfully aware of the head fatigue caused by headphones pressing the temples of your glasses too tightly against your head. Here the Turtle Beach Recon 500 headphones perform very well, allowing for long gaming or listening sessions.

As you would expect, there is a built-in microphone on a flexible stem. Where we’ve seen a few models that take a fold-down approach to cushioning or use, there’s no such functionality on the Turtle Beach Recon 500 headphones. Instead, there’s an on-ear mic mute button that’s quite large and easy to hit if you need to mute yourself mid-battle. It works well, but if you’re also thinking about using the Turtle Beach Recon 500 for podcasting, for example, it’s worth noting that hitting the button introduces a remarkable audio pop to your recordings. You won’t be able to fool anyone into not being muted when you are, in other in words. turtle beach exploration 500

On the plus side, if you just want to use the Turtle Beach Recon 500 headphones as headphones without the more obvious gaming connection, removing the mic should make that pretty easy. However, that’s going to work better for the black set than the Arctic Camo, which just screams “gaming.”

The Turtle Beach Recon 500 headphones have a simple and rather small volume rocker on the left earpiece, just behind the braided cable that leads to a standard 3.5mm plug. Again, this is all very good for the headphones course designed primarily for gamers. The only downside here is that the cable measures only 1.3 meters.

If you connect to a controller that’s enough, but if you’re using a desktop PC you might find it a bit short unless you’re already very close to your gaming rig. Performance: 60mm drivers deliver a solid, bass-heavy sound

Using a standard 3.5mm jack means the Turtle Beach Recon 500 headphones will work with just about any gaming gear you can think of. I’ve tested them with the Xbox Series X/S consoles, the PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and a variety of handhelds.

It’s probably not what the Turtle Beach designers had in mind specifically, but I can attest that they’ll work pretty well with the Neo Geo Pocket Color, although the sonic limitations of those aging wearables don’t show off the Turtle Beach Recon 500 headphones. their best size.

To really get the most out of the Turtle Beach Recon 500 headphones, you need to line them up up with more modern dishes, gaming wise. Here the headphones’ built-in 60mm drivers perform well, with good spatial audio that, rather predictably, leans towards bass to accentuate each recording as clearly as possible.

Playing Spider-Man: Miles Morales on PS5 gave me a solid soundscape that captured the game’s virtual New York City very well indeed, as I switched to the frenetic but silly action of EDF: World Brothers saw the game play. more gun-heavy aesthetics were well presented.

The included mic takes some calibration to get right, but that’s pretty common for any flexible mic.
