The Review on Yamaha A-S3200

Yamaha’s flagship A-S3200 integrated amplifier is a solid, no-nonsense choice for the analog enthusiast

Clear and detailed presentation Impressive levels of resolution Excellent build and finish

Against

Midrange is a bit lean Presentation lacks verve Phono stage needs adjustable cartridge chargelading

Yamaha’s A-S3200 isn’t quite what we expected. The retro-style flagship integrated amplifier is not a fashion item, chosen by potential buyers for its nostalgic value. Nor is it a cutting-edge technological statement with Yamaha throwing the gauntlet at rival manufacturers by using its undisputed engineering prowess.

What we have here is a pretty straightforward all-analog integrated designed with a lot of care. It has a sensible features list and, most importantly, a feat that justifies the hefty price tag. To build

The A-S3200 is a beautifully built product, as expected at this level. Any panel lines up perfect, and every control and switch works with pin-sharp precision. Much of the amp’s retro vibe comes from those dual signal meters. We like the way they look, but practically they’re not that useful. Anyway, it’s nice to have them.

This amp is an impressively solid beast thanks to its sturdy housing and heavy weight of 25 kg, so make sure your stand is sturdy enough to up to the job. It also gets a bit warm, so it’s a good idea to leave plenty of ventilation space.

Take a look at that immaculate case and it’s clear that Yamaha has refused to cut corners. The overall electronic circuitry is a fully balanced design to minimize noise and improve resolution. There is a substantial 623VA toroidal mains transformer and a generous 88,000uF of smoothing capacitance.

The engineers are obsessed with the details, such as the quality of the internal connecting cables and the mechanical integrity of the case. Even the bolts on the feet are welded in place to provide more rigidity. The silver-plated brass feet are height-adjustable to compensate for any unevenness in the support surface.
Features

If we accept that this is a fully analog product, there is little to complain about when it comes to connectivity. There are six line inputs, including two balanced XLR options.

The XLR inputs have little toggle switches underneath and these can attenuate the signal (so there’s no big jump in level between the single-ended and balanced sources) or swap the phase. These are not common features and we’re glad Yamaha made the effort to include them.

Those with record players can rest easy. The A-S3200 has a switchable moving magnet/moving coil phono stage, although it is a pity that there is no adjustable electrical load to optimize the results for a specific cartridge.

While the phono stage’s 47 ohm moving magnet input impedance works well with just about any cartridge of its type, it’s a little odd that Yamaha chose to use a 50 ohm value for the moving coil option. While MCs vary in terms of their charging requirements, a reading of 100 ohms would have suited many more cartridges. It’s not a make-or-break situation, but you have to be careful with cartridge choice if you want optimal results. Technical specifications Yamaha A-S3200
